This is actually not as much of a rant as it might initially seem. Also i'm not trying to convince anybody that singleplayer is superior or anything, because it's just a matter of preference, but i've always found multiplayer (especially online) to be less to my tates.
Alot of games these days seem to have online multiplayer as a large portion of the game (alot of the time more than half), which is cool, but sometimes the singleplayer get's neglected. I guess one of the things i've always thought about a game are the story, the characters and the immersion. Though in most MP there's no real use/need for a story or in depth characters. Also i've always found just personally that MP also lacks immersion because it becomes much more of a competition to try and pwn other players, but SP is just about your experience which you can (most of the time) do at your own pace.
The other thing i've realised i don't enjoy as much about MP, which i've realised mostly after playing L4D, is that it realies alot on playing with people who are; not pricks, about your experience level and if it's team based, then good team players (which is very much the case in L4D as you probably already know). And online play often means i end up relying on the good will and decent personality of the wonderful online gaming community, which usually turns sour.
It can just be a bit dissapointing when games like L4D or Halo 3 (no i'm not trying to turn this into a Halo bashing session) are 90%/95% about multiplayer, when really i want to focus on SP. Okay, sure you can play the campaign in Halo 3 but it's pretty short, and you can play with bots in L4d but they just plain suck.
But anyway, as i said, this is just based on my preferences, i'm not putting down MP or anything.

Yeah, if you're looking for some decent single player games RPG/RTS are your best bet. Most shooters these days are pretty much entirely focused on the multiplayer experience. The COD/Crysis/Serious Sam/Painkiller series are pretty decent single player fps experiences though, look into those if you haven't already.

I hate it when a new game comes out and the SP campaign is about 5 hours long. It just feels as though some games should be released as multiplayer only.

Good thinking, however i'm not the biggest fan of RTS's, so i'll probably have to stick with RPG's. I guess it's pretty hard to find an FPS these days that doesn't sport online MP.

I like coop campaigns best. They have everything you get in SP (minus a bit of immersion admittedly) plus you get the social factor from MP and you only play with one or two friends so there's no whiny 5 year olds or obnoxious racists.

I mostly agree, however nothing really beats a local multiplayer session, as this can help to eleiminate some of the problems with playing online MP. I admit that not all games are as good with local MP, but if you get some mates around for Smash bros or Left4Dead, not only can it be a lot of fun, but you can also help support someone who may not be up to your level (or get support yourself!), and offer/receive advice in real time. That said, I still love spending some quality me time in my favourite gaming worlds.

In the Ideal world it would be a form of how diablo2 was set up.

you had singleplayer and co-op multiplayer, all storywise.

I know how you feel :(. I normally feel a bit cheated when i get a game with only a 5 or > SP camapign. It seems as though sometimes the SP is just a brush off and really the game is just bought for the MP. As you said, they should just make a MP game only then.

I agree, it seems like multiplayer is being focused on too much and singleplayer is something tacked on - you know, kind of like it was 10 to 15 years ago only the other way around. I get that some people like the multiplayer thing, but I prefer single player and it really makes me mad when I'm given a short single player mode so the developer can add more multiplayer content that I will never use.

What's worse, games that have good single player experiences are often dinged in reviews or outright ignored by gamers because they lack multiplayer. Often it doesn't even make sense. Mirror's Edge? Could a game like that even have multiplayer? It doesn't matter though, because I still saw people complaining about the lack of it.
Agree with you all the way. And i agree that Mirror's Edge couldn't really have had much of an MP. Maybe you could race against someone else, but i could imagine that the fun wouldn't last very long.

I guess i didn't really say much bout co-op, which i don't mind. Games, like the Lego Star Wars and Lego Indi etc work just as well on co-op. Some games like Mario Kart actually are better with mates. And what's more you can rely on someone you know who won't be a complete nuisnace. But i guess even friends can be bitches by tking you when they get bored or the like.

i always liked how single player allowed you to save and leave on most games.

L4D takes 30-20 mins to Finnish a level

Then put the difficulty on Expert instead of speedrunning on easy..

Yeah true, RPG's are a bit of a saviour for SP people.
Completely. That's why I can't ***** about JRPGs and further limit my choices!

I really hate how a load of the achievements on XBL are for online playing. It makes me feel like I haven't finished the whole game because I'm inadequate when really it's because I don't want to go online and get my ass shot off by a 13 year old screaming, "HA HA, NOOOOOOOB!" in my ear.

Competitive parkour racing?
It sort of already has that with the time trial modes. You can race against your friend's time. Last time I checked I still held the record for the prologue chapter among my friends. Did I really need them there to race against them? No.
It's a fair point, I was just making an example of how there could have been a multiplayer mode added. I'm also sick of multiplayer focused games practically ignoring single player mode, but there's nothing I can do to stop it yet.

Perhaps you would enjoy the single-player gardening action of Viva Pinata?

On a more serious note, some of the PC Sim-type games are pretty rad single player experiences. I'm thinking specifically of Rollercoaster Tycoon here.
