Why not just buy one?

I use Norton (here comes the hate) and i have never had a problem with a slow system or it being to much of a pain.

I remember not liking it at first but over the new releases it has sharpened up a lot. You just have to make sure you don't fall for clicking the download button that tried to make you pay.

After install it's very easy to use and very effective with regular updates.

It's what I always use.

If your aussie you pay about $120 retail but if your american about $70 for a full year.

I only pay $15 hence why i get it

I have it. It's a one time cost for the year, but I forget exactly how much it is. I keep getting reminders that mine is about to run out, so if it comes up today, I'll come back with the actual price (unless someone else gets it here first).

Edit- Nvm. It's above this post.

Personally, I like Avast. Sure, VIRUS DATABASE HAVE BEEN UPDATED can be a little annoying at times, but otherwise it sits there and does the job quietly. Until A VIRUS HAS BEEN DETECTED. Yeah, it has a crappy voice synth.

If you're on Windows, then I say Microsoft Security Essentials.

Free, doesn't go "ZOMG UPGRADE!" (as it's completely free), is unintrusive, updates itself and is pretty damned good.

I hated that crappy synth voice too. Note I said hated - you can turn it off. It's in Settings|Sounds. Unchecking Enable avast! sounds will turn off all sounds. If you want some sound and only want to eliminate the talking, leave Enable checked and uncheck Voiceovers at the bottom of that page.

OT: I've been using avast! (silly exclamation point) for a couple years now. It's free, updates often and I've yet to be infected. It's easy to use and configure and it's not too intrusive.

when avast updates, does it go: HEYHEYHEY! UPDATE ME, UPDATE ME!! IT WILL ONLY TAKE LIKE HALF AN HOUR AND I WILL WANT TO UPDATE AGAIN IN FIVE MINUTES! just follow this link and type in some shit and we will send you an e-mail with a code blablablablabla...

or does it just update automaticly? ...^^'(yea i know im a bit over the top sometimes)

my parents used to have avast and i actually sort of enjoyed that crappy voice, it reminded me a bit of GlaDOS (they should totally bring in that voice actress that did glados to record new voices for Avast! cuz that would be awesome :D)

AVG Free is a huge package, and keeps my system running really smoothly. Don't like McAfee much to be honest, it possesses my computer and uses it as it's *****.

Avast is a popular one though I have never used it. Ad-Aware is pretty good too though I havn't used it either. I've only ever really needed AVG and a firewall (I have Zone Alarm if you were curious)

Ok I use Avast Spy Bot and Malwarebytes. All three are free and my computer has never run better. I use to use AVG but it didn't get everything. Do all three with a C Cleaner and your good.

I've been using Symantecs Norton Antivirus line for years. It works very well, and doesn't affect system performance

I remember McAfee. In an older version, you had to fight with the system to close the splash screen it would throw up on system startup.

Webroots software line sucks, it freaks out any time you add a browser favorite.

On the Matter of MS Security Essentials, only install it if you have no other protection. I installed it with Norton 2010 and took a big performance hit. Needless to say, I no longer use it.

IMO, AVG sucks. It balls around in my face. The only reason I was using it is because Norton 09 doesn't work with Win7. Thankfully, I got a copy of Norton 2010, and no longer have to put up with its BS.

No, avast! doesn't talk to me at all since I totally turned off sounds. The anti-virus database updates happen automatically but the actual program updates silently ask my permission to download. That stuff is all in the Settings.

No comment on your apparent love affair with the avast! love goddess. What goes on between you, your keyboard and you antivirus program is your business, just be safe...

Automatic updates, with a small pop-up box when it's done that disappears in about five seconds (about the size of a Steam notification. Similar time length, too). Although, you do have to register annually, although that's small beer. I've ran it on a pretty crappy computer, and I didn't see a noticeable performance decrease.
