In my opinion, horror movies today aren't scary anymore. I don't like the ones that use loud noises or ghost clichés. I'm looking for ones that are more psychological and realistic. I've recently watched REC, Martyrs, and the Poughkeepsie Tapes. Do any of you know films that similar? Thanks.

Mirrors
28 Days/Weeks Later (kinda more action I guess)
The Alien, Predator and Alien vs. Predator movies
Cloverfield

I think that's all the ones I've seen, they were all pretty good.

I'm going to suggest Session 9. It's definately got a lot of psychological horror going on. The twist is a little predictible, but the very ending is one of the best horror moments in a long time. If you wanted something a little bit more oldschool, I think John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness has some pretty good moments.

Also, though it's not scary, I always suggest Trick r' Treat. It plays a lot with the conventions of the genre, but it doesn't do the whole douchebaggy Scream thing and pretend it's too smart to be a horror film. It's a straight up rollercoaster ride, and it's about the most fun you can possibly have watching a horror film.

From what I've heard, the Japanese version of 'The Ring' is pretty much the scariest thing possible to man :p

May I recommend 'The Serpent and the Rainbow'? While some parts may be hokey it is directed by Wes Craven and some parts get really freaky

This may just be due to growing up with it, but the Haunting has always creeped me and my family out(the old one, not the new crappy one). It's a ghost story, but you never actually see anything, which makes it creepy, unlike the new slashers. As long as you don't mind black and white, I think you should check it out.

Edit: I noticed that there are three the Haunting's out now. I'm talking about the 1963 version. The 1999 one is terrible and I don't know about the 2009 version.

Stephen King's, Storm of the Century, Session 9, Hellraiser Inferno (trust me its much better than the others), The Myst is pretty good, Blair Witch 2: Book of shadows (again you'll have to trust me on this one. It has little to do with the first one and it's actually pretty damn good). The Thing (80's version) is pretty sweet too.

I've got one. It's creepy, atmospheric and the best way I could describe is it looks like someone filmed their nightmare. It's Pandorum. Super creepy, super scary, and the end will blow your mind out of your ass. Oh, and in case you're not from the british commonwealth or some such crap, Brain Dead is actually called Dead Alive in North America. I personally feel it's a MUCH better title than Brain Dead.

If you want creepy and atmospheric, go back to the classics. Halloween and The Thing should be right up your street. Try ' Audition' as well. Now that is a creepy as fuck film.

I too am in that overly desensitized vein. Its been an extremely long time since anything truly scared me.

28 days later (provided you have the theater system to accomodate it without your speakers rattling, which kills the mood)

Descent was good in the second row in the theater because of everything going on screen

More psychological horror, thats truly hard to do because its practically impossible to pull off. But I would suggest Jacobs ladder from 1990. Was one of the more intense psychologically driven films I can recall.

I would also say two of the most scary films I have seen excluding anything above, was the Blair witch project, and Paranormal activity. But both of which need corresponding factors.
1: See them with absolutely no prior knowledge of them or what they are about
2: Fully commit to suspension of disbelief and accept what your seeing is real footage
3: Appropriate ambiance. Season of the year helps with this, time of night helps with this, location helps with this. In my case, Paranormal activity I watched in early October of 09, at 3AM in the morning, in an empty house, surrounded by trees, on a windy night. Ambiance is everything
4: Optional: Dependent on your proclivities, Chemical enhancements that amplify paranoia go along way.
