You'll be too frustrated with the controls to be scared. Unless you're a retro gamer. But you mentioned L4D, so I figure you play modern ones more often.

I have this problem, except with not only horror games, but FPSs as well.

The constant worrying about whether or not you'll be hit from behind, and the red edges of the screen and quick heartbeats just puts me in a panic. Also, being shot by someone you can't see gets me in a frenzy. I have to constantly muster the courage to finish a level, and I have yet to finish a game..

Make sure you're playing in a familiar place with all the lights on and make ssure there's some one you trust (read: someone who won't try to scare you while playing) nearby.

Just take breaks whenever you need 'em.
What helped me get through the Flood levels of Halo 1 the first time I played it many years ago, was shouting "FLOODY BASTARDS!"
Anything scary is nullified if you make it silly.

Knowing that even games like L4D scare you, why did you even bother with Silent Hill?

I used to have the same panic with water levels

I think it was banjo kazooie and that fucking shark, also clankers cavern, the sense of claustraphibia and deepness

Play it in a well lit room during the daytime, preferably with other people. The games lose most, if not all, of their scare factor then, trust me. Of course, then all point to play the game is lost but well... Just be glad it was not 3 you picked up. 2 might have a better story and pacing (in addition to being longer), but 3 is much, much scarier.

The game isn't that frightening, but its fantastic plot made up for that. I won't spoil anything, but you're going to love it, just remember to keep an open eye for puzzles and look around for anything, you'll need it.

For the most part, most of the encounters really aren't terrifying. But after you've conquered this walk in the park of a game, grow some hair on your chest and pick up Amnesia: The Dark Decent.

After so, play it at night with all of the windows blocked, lights out, and volume up high. This is how men are made.

Stop being such a wimp. I'd use stronger terms about someone attention whoring on an internet forum about them being afraid to play a game but it might cop an infraction. So did the wimp comment give you enough?

When there's a scary game I wanna play, I talk to myself constantly making pathetic attempts at making entertaining commentary whilst most of what I say isn't funny or entertaining in the slightest which also serves to help make me feel as if I'm not actually alone, pathetic and sitting in my room by myself.
You know, like most Let's Players! /unnecessarily_mean/depressing
...That or I turn off the console/PC after playing for about 20 minutes, unplug it and hide under my Quilt then come back to the game a few days later and try again, with the same results...
I AM A MAN!...who hides under Quilts...

Edit: Make sure to bring a light with you when you hide under the Quilt.

It's not that scary, besides you will have your trusty radio.
Or play it in short lengths of time. Like, 2 save spots per session or something.
