I recommend you pick up Mount and Blade. I started playing it yesterday, and is quite good, though theres no story as such.

It depends what sort of games you want. Are getting your games from steam or are you buying them from the shop? What genre do you want? Are you a casual or core gamer? I guess the fact your getting half-life puts you on the path of core. I don't really know anythign about you but i will suggest some genres: FPS (first person shooter), RPG (Role Playing Game), RTS (Real time stratagy), MMO (massivly multipplayer online(usually rpgs)) and stealth games (self explanitory). There are many other genres but these are the genres most people end up in.

RPGs AHOY! Dragon Age, Divinity II, Fallout 3 (1 and 2 are fantastic but the graphics and gameplay turn allot of people off), Borderlands, Mount and Blade, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Gothic series (its an acquired taste) and those are just recent ones that i know are on sale on steam right now, i'm sure there are others but getting those games will keep you entertained for about...900-1000 hours and are a great intro into the different types of RPGs out there.

You really picked the best time to start playing again, so many freaking fantastic deals going on right now, no matter the genre you can build up your collection for next to nothing.

Just Cause 2 is great, with mods you can even recreate Superman, which I'm definitely going to look into when I get a desktop.

More common suggestions: GTA4, Oblivion, Mass Effect series, Fallout 3/New Vegas.

Also look at anything on Steam, maybe try some MMOs depending on your interest (Superheroes? City of Heroes or Champions Online, the latter going Free-To-Play soon).

Personal Suggestions: I love Prototype, it's a wonderful open-world game, and I think it needs a little more praise because while it's not graphically superior, fun factor is high.

Note: I'm sure you own a console, I would be surprised if you didn't, but I can probably safely assume you can ignore my suggestions, it's likely you've heard/played these, and might only be interested in PC-only games, which I'm sorry I can't help with, as I have a crap laptop that can't play good games.

Ah Fallout 1 and 2! I've only recently played 1 after playing 3, and I love it. That too is a wonderful suggestion.

Edit: I hear a lot of good things about the PC-only The Witcher and The Witcher II, also Two Worlds II I heard is really good but only released in Europe. If you're there, though, I suggest you look at it, I hear a lot of good things about it.

if you're going the Steam route, you can't go wrong with TF2 and Garrys mod. Both pretty damn cheap, and imo Garrys mod has been one the best value for money purchases I've ever made.

About 500 hours clocked up and I would say at least 90% of that is only on one game mode.

From the free games front, I've got a little backlog

If you're into shmups, pick up Fraxy. You can download user created bosses and stages, many of which are very well made. And create your own of course.

If you prefer a game that mixes the roguelike genre (somewhat) with the platformer genre, try Spelunky. I've had tons of fun, even if I have died over 300 times within the first two areas

Knytt, a kind of odd game, is a 2D platformer that's inspired by Shadow of the Colossus. It's a huge world to explore. The only big differences are that you are unarmed, there are no colossi, and you have to collect ship parts. Just don't look at a map, it ruins the experience.

Iji (that first letter is a capital i. It's kind of hard to tell) is an interesting game. It's a game where any approach, any build, aggression, and pacifism are all viable strategies. Some people have called it System Shock: 2D Non-Horror Edition with it's stat system. Plus some of the weapons are just so satisfying.
