I really have to do all that?

Why is it that when certain games like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart, when they have unlockable characters, karts, or other such things, have such incredibly tedious requirements to unlock them? For example, in Mario Kart Wii, you have to play through all the cups, on every difficulty, and get first place on each one, just to unlock most of the racers and karts. Then, to unlock the rest of the content, you have to go into Time Trial mode, beat the record of all 32 courses by 7 seconds, and then race the expert ghost that you unlock from that. It's annoying and repetitive. Mabye I'm just bitching, but I really don't feel like busting my ass for several hours just to unlock things that other games would give you freely. Anyway, I've gone on too long, and I'd just like to know all of your opinions on this.

It's the developers trying to pad out the length of the game through excessive difficulty, them trying to add a fair amount of challenge, or just them trolling their companies.

Any or all three at once could apply to any game that suffers from this. Depends on the developer.

Just incentive to keep playing really. Some games like Assassin's Creed 2 become very routine very quickly, and feel they need to give you some new toy that will largely go ignored as you trudge along.

Just simple design logic: if the player feels rewarded, they'll keep playing.

Unlockable is just the old-school achievement/ trophy.

More rewarding too, in my opinion.

Well, I'm not against unlocking completley(I'm not really good at saying what I want). I'm just kinda stumped at why basic things that you should already have are unlockable. Mabye instead of unlocking karts, in terms of Mario Kart, you could unlock characters costumes or props for custom courses (which I'm kinda surprised hasn't been included in Mario Kart games yet). It wouldn't detract from the gameplay as much if that were the case. But that's just my idea.

Yeah, it's pretty crappy. It makes some sense in games like Street Fighter II to unlock the 4 bosses. It's annoying in Mario Kart to unlock Toad.
