Let me start off by saying it was it a good movie. I just didn't think it was a great movie. Maybe I'm missing something.

For the people that have seen it, can you share you opinion on it and why you liked it.

Maybe I was looking at it the wrong way, cause the way I saw it was just another sci-fi flick.

I’m happy for you.
it’s one of the only original Sci-Fi movies this year so be happy.
I don't see how it's "orginal". I've seen things like this before.

quick comparison:
latest star trek: familiar cast as a bunch of newbies on the good old enterprise. movie about nothing.

latest transformers: a movie about a college kid who has robots for friends. movie about nothing.

district 9: visitors from an alien world are treated in the typical human fashion of "denigrate what we don't understand" and are forced to live in ghettos. a figure of authority will come to terms with this by becoming one of them and in the end sympathize with the visitors. movie about something

action movies with rich subtext are a precious rarity

It really hit me when a friend of mine that didn't want to see the movie asked me to summarize it for her and I realized how all the details of the movie fit together so nicely. It was complex, it had depth, and it all made sense. A science fiction movie hasn't been able to do that in quite some time. Also, Wikas is officially part of the dweeb-turned-hero club.

true. but every other Sci-Fi movie this year is a sequel and I’m getting VERY tired of them.
considering the low budget on it (30 million or so) its really good .
Yes, it's good, but it didn't seem as good as everyone made it out to be. And that doesn't explain how it's orginal.

It also didn't feel like an action movie. Yes, it had action in it, but I wouldn't claim it to be an action title.

It's been done before. These people come here, we don't like them, put them here, preform experiments, and just be all around dicks to them.

I still don't see the orginallity here.

I think it's an interesting take on the scifi alien genre. Most aliens are depicted in either two extremes -- either they're super evil and we're fighting them, or they are friendly somehow and we're working with them and their technology to fight something else. These aliens were depicted as a blank slate, helpless on the whole as a group, to the point where humans are forced to offer aid. There were no evil or good sides in any particular way, just specific individuals as being good or evil. It is a pretty good movie, though a bit violent at times (made me cring at some of the scenes).

I liked it but it was a bit dark for my tastes. Movies are meant to be an escapist medium; why make them depressing?

Just out of curiosity, what made sense in that movie? The way I saw it, the movie was full of plot-holes and just all around no sense making.

I think you missed some of the movie. Most of the humans didn't want them there. They were hated by most humans. Yes, there was an alien rights group, but it was just that, a group. The humans were dicks, and the aliens were good. Seems like the movie Terra to me.

Well with that mentality, nothing is original.
Even though I've never seen, or heard of, a movie where aliens come to earth on the brink of starvation and death and we give them refuge, but that causes some serious social animosity and they try to move them which starts...I won't go further for those who haven't seen it.

Even if that's not original to you, then don't look at it for it's originality, look at it for it's fresh take on the sci-fi genre. Not mindless, transparent characters, but real characters. Not a elementary plot written by guys who like to see thing blown up, but a great story of self-sacrifice, greater good, and social justice.
Couple that with great special effects and cinematography, and you got a great, fresh movie.

I saw it as a good fresh movie, I just didn't see it as orginal or great. Like I said, maybe I just looked at it the wrong way.

Well then it's just personal taste! Not everyone has to agree on what a great movie is or isn't.

Out of curiosity, though, what would you consider a 'great, original' movie?

well if you say it's been done in movies before, please give an example of the same type of plot

the thing is it is a new and refreshing twist on an old message and frankly goes into the whole idea of what sci-fi is and should be. it should be an interesting moral story wrapped in a fantastical story about the future. this is exactly what District 9 is.

the message behind it is a timeless one and one that needs to be repeated, HOWEVER the movie and the story is a new and original one.

I'm an odd bird, so I wouldn't know something great or orginal if it hit me in the face.
