With the release of 'James Bond 007 Legends' and most of the other James bond games,it has led me to believe that developers still think that they could recreate the timeless classic that is Goldeneye by sticking with the fps formula.Though they always fall short by ending up with a rather generic CoD clone

James Bond 007 Bloodstone, took a different approach though,it was a Third-Person Shooter, with a little bit of stealth sections.I quite enjoyed it but the game does suffer from being a chest-high wall cover shooter. It did a have some neat mechanics though, like the SC:Conviction-like close quarters take down or the Bullet-time.I feel that if they introduced more game mechanics like maybe the fighting from sleeping dogs or the Batman games and make the game more then just cover shooter,it would have been an amazing game.Yet,people still complained about the game not being an fps like its predecessors.

My question is:Should these James Bond games stick to being first-person shooters and eventually recreate Goldeneye? or Should they move on to other genres and new concepts? or should they just be abandoned entirely?

I would like to see original adventures, which take advantage of the narrative techniques of video games, rather than try to shoe-horn in the plot in between set-pieces.

Apparently this worked in Goldeneye, but back then video game levels were nothing but a series of set-pieces and the bits of text connecting them was easily forgiven since it was fairly standard. Story is where the FPSs of the past get a pretty major nostalgic pass these days.

I don't have a problem with cover-based mechanics, but it really needs to be an option, rather than the only way to survive a fire fight. It also helps if the enemy AI is fairly aggressive (i.e. stupid) and they charge your position more often than they hide behind walls turning the whole thing into whack-a-mole.

I loved Bloodstone. It was a fairly long game and driving sections were incredible. If I remember correctly the game had a "to be continued" ending. But the studio that made the game is gone now, thanks to Activision. So we'll probably never see how that story ends.

You can go through half the game on hard mode just punching dudes, and the PC version had driving controls about as smooth as sucking twenty dicks while wrestling a shark in a tub full or excitable ostriches.

No thanks.

You just aren't looking back far enough- before Bond games went all COD on us, Eurocom came off the end of it's woefully bad Tomorrow Never Dies 3rd person game and tried cloning Goldeneye's FPS approach with The World Is Not Enough. It's got a bit of charm to it and hits most of the right notes, and while not quite as smooth controlling as Goldeneye, dare I say it actually had better multiplayer, along with a few improvements in singleplayer as well (secondary functions on weapons, switching gadgets on the fly without pausing etc). All in all, it was an overall successful FPS, and still fun to play.

Also, the game you're wanting -another 3rd person action driver like Bloodstone- HAS been made. It's called Everything or Nothing and most regard it as EA's best made bond game. Check it out.

Bloodstone is definitely one of the best Activision Bond games, and it tried something different (If you could say that) and it had Daniel Craig voicing which makes me wonder, does a Bond game need to have the actor to play him? Everything or Nothing had Brosnan which made it feel more authentic. Nightfire and Agent under fire were good but didn't have Brosnan.
Sadly Bloodstone will never get a sequel now, and it was a step in the right direction. Now it just looks like more FPS games for James Bond!

The tps james bond game got made waaaay before bloodstone (which i found meh). ITs Called everything or nothing. Was not based on a film and had the important voice actors (brosnon, dench). Had (now a bit dated) cover system, great driving missions, ok stealth, ok fist fights and one of the best lock-on systems in games :D AND had a good co op mode. Its was great :D

Also much replay value trying to get the platinum medals/ all the bond moments.

I'd actually like to see a Bond role playing game in a similar style to Alpha Protocol.

Why not give us options. Do you romance Scorpio's sexy assistant to gain access to his volcano base or have to go in guns blazing because you picked the naive scientist who discovered his plan.

There is so much more to Bond than just shooting, third or first person, so why not take advantage of that.

Pretty much this. Until that stupid firefight at the end of the refinery type level, I had just abused the game horribly. Then I get there, and the thing was ridiculously stupid.

Difficulty was all over the place, poorly optimised, kinda ugly a lot of the time, mostly cover based crap, and the story was just utter crap. Set-piece to set-piece to exposition about crap, to end. I didn't even realise the game had ended for a moment.

A generic exploitation of a movie franchise, another 3rd person shooter tie-in. No thanks. Give me another Nightfire.

No you don't, it was shit.

A Bond game should be Deus Ex and Hitman mixed into a big ol' bundle of goodness. Bond doesn't suit shooters - from any perspective.

Does anyone care? The plot made no sense whatsoever.

Sure he does- He's worked perfectly in a shooter in the past and he will agai... er... COULD do it again.

You want to know how to make a Bond game that pleases everyone? Make it a sandbox like Just Cause 2- split it into four missions[footnote]by 'mission' I mean like a single prolonged campaign[/footnote] over two time periods, so lets say two missions in the 60s/70s and two modern day. All the missions send you to some island paradise/mysterious country on some seemingly small errand- an agent is missing, a spy satellite crashed in the area, mysterious radio/microwave signals coming from there etc etc. Each mission turns out to have a megolomaniac bent on world domination in a cleverly disguised secret base, and you're dumped in the country and have to figure it out for yourself. The main differnces between time periods are the cars and guns. Older ones are slower and stronger, new ones are faster and weaker.

You use a combination of following leads and problem solving to find out what's going on, shooting sections (at any time you can switch to 1st person), driving (especially if you ever get near the secret base and the enemy scout cars/planes/boats come after you) and the like. Assassination attempts will be made on you regularly depending on how well you avoid being spied on (yes, they saw you arrive at the airport right at the start), and if you kill enough innocents M gets furious enough with you to recall you to London, failing you (until you reload your last save, anyway).

You can be captured by the bad guys as well as killed, and if you are captured you wake up in a heavily guarded area the big bad owns (like a warehouse or factory or whatever) and must escape.

There's a Casino in the area, and you can meet several of the top bad guys there and try and charm information out of them. Also a large roster of casino games are playable, naturally.

Maybe you can seduce women, including plot important characters, but if they don't try to kill you in bed, maybe some assassin interrupts you every time you're just about to get it on, which always leaves bond a little miffed.

Finally, and most importantly, no member of MI6 talks to you through an earpiece in any part of the game EVER, except for the tutorial. having M and Q always taking time out from their other responsibilities (and I'd imagine they'd be some pretty freaking big responsibilities) to watch my every move and offer chit chat at every single doorway I cross is the absolute bane of Bond games lately. In this Bond sandbox, you never get ANY hints unless you specifically ask for them.

My favourite has always been Nightfire, I have good memories of getting drunk and playing the fantastic multiplayer with my mates, I always played as Max Zorin and said everything in a bad Walken imitation. Good times.

Yes. Hear that Squenix? If you ruin the Hitman series you can buy James Bond and take other garrote at it...

Seriously though James Bond channeling Hitman through way of Deus Ex would be awesome. Not that James Bond shouldn't shoot guns, get into thrilling punch ups and dive out of the way of explosion or drive a car with mini-guns.

I dunno, i haven't played 007 legends yet, but i really felt quantum of solace was a much better game than it had any right to be, and that the only thing really holding it back was the lack of multiplayer.

Blood Stone by comparison just seemed kind of bland to me, and I didn't really care for it that much. They've never really matched Everything or Nothing when it comes to the Bond third person shooter.

I haven't played bloodstone, but Quantum of solace was actually fairly solid for a movie tie in. It did have some annoying QTEs and pointless mini games, and it was essentially "gears of bond", but the weapons felt good, and the action was fast paced.

Personally one of my favourite bond games was "from russia with love", which was a third person shooter that made you feel more like a secret agent through clever use of gadgets, some cool if a little unpolished driving sections, and being SEAN FUCKING CONNERY. So, yeah...do that.

What we need is Nightfire. It was an FPS, but the Driving sections were fun. Fun as hell.

Best part: Dropping a load of oil behind me and watching the other car chasing me crash and burn, causing quite a train-wreck.
