I want to be a policeman but everybody tells me it's a stupid idea and that I shouldn't do it especially since I live in México and there's kind of a big mob war going on right now, but after thinking it through and through there is really nothing else I want to do because I really enjoy helping people and I feel that I can make a difference by becoming a policeman, so I wanted to ask you is it really that bad of an idea. (Note that you're answer will not necessarilly change my oppinion of becoming a policeman but I am interested to see waht people think)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that there is one big doubt I have about becoming a policeman and that is that I don't think I can kill another person, even if it is to save my life I don't think I can really kill someone if I ever land on a situation like that.

I say if it's what you want to do, do it. I'm thinking about being a cop and probably will if I don't get the grades to do some sort of engineering at Uni.

Good for you!
I am also considering joining the Police, to give something back to this country.
Although our situations are a lot different.... It would be very dangerous where you are... but if you do not mind that, then this world can always use more people to uphold the law :D

If you've got the drive and balls to do it, then you'll do bloody well. From what I hear about Mexico, they need more people willing to the right thing and good on you for being one of them.

Well, at least you want to be a policeman for the right reasons.

But yeah, I wouldnt want to be a policeman in a country that had guns. I would crap my pants every day.

Do what you think will make you happy. Most of the time it's better to regret the things you did rather than the things you didn't.

I think it's a good idea. But then I live in the UK where people don't have guns so our policemen don't die all the time like in lamer countries. However, they do get beaten up a lot. My mates dad is a policeman and he had his nose broken so many times (like 30) that they said there was no stable bone left and so he now has a big wedge of plastic holding his nose up.

But yes, it's a great idea to be a policeman, as long as you are aware of the risks.

But the reason I want to become a policeman is not to be happy myself is because I think I can help other people be happy if a become one!

Are you racist? If not, don't bother you won't fit in. If you love beating on a *insert ethnic minority here* then you'll love it.

Sorry, I'm brown (half asian - half white) and have had a bad incident in the UK recently. Just a bit down on law enforcement at the moment.

I'm somewhat amazed by the amount of Mexican people on the Escapist. Forgive my total lack of knowledge of the country, but I don't remember seeing many Mexicans before. The few reports I do get through are usually of the borders, or drunken Tequilla binges.

Could you tell me more about it?

Just joking

More about the country or more about the kind of people that live in the country?

But presumably making other people happy would have a positive effect on your happiness?
If not then it's maybe not a good idea. Plus, from what the other posts are saying, it could be a tough job. And even tougher if you want to be an honest cop.

Actually that is another big problem corruption seems to be really high right now and I've heard of cops getting killed just because they were honest

If your not frightend about death then go for it. I dunno about mexico, but here the cops get treated like dirt. Don't expect people to listen to you just because you have a gun and a uniform. Also you probally will be put in a life-death situation, so be ready for that.
