Okay so its going to be a Preacher refrence so while in Hell Doomguy gets these 2 Old West style dual pistols and he uses them akimbo style thoughts
Aren't they meant to be the same individual?SweetShark said:I don't see New Doom Guy holding two old western-like revolvers be suitable for its theme.
For the Classic Doomguy maybe is better. Give Doomguy Two giant Magnums and he is ready to go.
That's just an incredibly bland in-joke that's only going to make sense to people who've read an old graphic novel. And even then it's a goddamn stretch.PapaGreg096 said:Okay so its going to be a Preacher refrence so while in Hell Doomguy gets these 2 Old West style dual pistols and he uses them akimbo style thoughts
Beat me to it. Doomguy wouldn't bother with pee-shooters (who uses the pistol anyway??). He needs a pair of hand cannons that would break the average person's wrists.SweetShark said:Give Doomguy Two giant Magnums and he is ready to go.
Doesn't he use a double buck shotgun and a chainsaw, the dude has a little style to his weaponarysageoftruth said:The only thing is, Doom Guy always struck me as relatively practical in his weaponry compared to many FPS protagonists. He was no Serious Sam, or Duke Nukem. As a result, while many of his weapons were pretty cool, they weren't style over substance cool. Wielding a revolver or two when you've got an arsenal of space-age weaponry reeks of posturing and Doom Guy does not posture. He just kills.
On the other hand, I'd like to see a weapon made from the body parts of a demon. Maybe give him a flamethrower made from the head of an imp. That fits his style of pragmatism in my opinion.
True, both definitely have a cathartic appeal to them that isn't all that practical. Still, those do somehow fit Doom Guy. Perhaps because he's a brutal killer who takes pleasure in harming his demonic foes. I feel both could be justified, because they create big holes/rips in his foes, and the more pain they inflict, the better. I could picture him shoving the shotgun up the throat of a demon and screaming "Eat this, you bastard!"PapaGreg096 said:Doesn't he use a double buck shotgun and a chainsaw, the dude has a little style to his weaponarysageoftruth said:The only thing is, Doom Guy always struck me as relatively practical in his weaponry compared to many FPS protagonists. Well, Doom 64 had the Unmaker aka the Alien Laser, a sort of demonic laser gun made from the bones of demons. It was pretty much just a demon-themed laser gun, but it did have this neat mechanic where you could upgrade it by finding hidden demon keys, turning it from something slightly better than the Plasma Gun into a torrent of destruction that arguably beats the BFG in power and utility.sageoftruth said:On the other hand, I'd like to see a weapon made from the body parts of a demon. Yeah, their presence in between the other guns is a little odd[footnote]If I remember right, a Doom 3 datapad actually pokes fun at the 'why did a research base on Mars receive a shipment of chainsaws' thing.[/footnote]. It makes a little bit more sense in Doom 2, since that takes place on Earth, so you could handwave it as Doomguy grabbing whatever guns are on hand. But I suppose you could just chalk both of them down to Rule of Cool and probably to the guys at iD making a reference to Ash Williams of Evil Dead fame.PapaGreg096 said:Doesn't he use a double buck shotgun and a chainsaw, the dude has a little style to his weaponary
Wow. I hadn't realized that. The chainsaw and "boomstick" are total Ash Williams icons. Nifty.Chimpzy said:Well, Doom 64 had the Unmaker aka the Alien Laser, a sort of demonic laser gun made from the bones of demons. I don't particularly want to see it return, but I wouldn't mind seeing a return of its upgrade mechanic i.e. you need to go out into the game to find the really well hidden upgrades. Would help if they didn't show up on the map once you get the upgrade that pretty much shows you where all the secrets are. Man, I despised that upgrade.

Yeah, I never made that connection either before I saw the videos on Doom by Errant Signal [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyOF2RsO3ck] and Ahoy [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6A4-SVUHQYI]. They talk about what influences went into the making of Doom, amongst other topics. My favorite is probably how they came up with the name: an 80's Tom Cruise movie where he plays a pool hustler.sageoftruth said:Wow. I hadn't realized that.
