this is a question from a practice math exam before the real math exam:

A kangaroo has decided to jump from adelaide to cairns, but it has a poor sense of direction.
It begins by jumping three metres north, and then jumping one metre east (this makes two jumps in total).
After this it decides to jump according to the following rules:

1.If both of the previous jumps were to the east, then it jumps two metres north ( this counts as one more jump)

2. Otherwise, it jumps one metre east (again this counts as one more jump.)

After the ninth jump (including the first two jumps described above) how many metres will the kangaroo have jumped in total ?. Note that you are measuring metres jumped north plus metres jumped east ( not the diagonal distance).

A)11
B)12
C)13
D)14
E)15

ps. i didn't make a poll becasue i want a proper answer not just some one clicking any and adding to the poll

3N + 1E is 4, the total amount left (max) is 11 meters. 8 / 2 is 4 with 1 remainder (even number maths - brute forced in my head), so there are 2 combinations of 2E + 2N plus the overflow of 2E.

Or something like this:

3N
1E
1E
2N
1E
1E
2N
1E
1E
That said, last time I posted a math problem answer here I got it wrong first time. YMMV.

Edit: Oh right, there are no rules about just jumping north?

You have fuzzy maths. The total of your answer is 13, not 11.

1st jump: 3 metres North
2nd: 1 metre East
3rd: 1 metre East
4th: 2 metres North
5th: 1 metre East
6th: 1 metre East
7th: 2 metres North
8th: 1 metre East
9th: 1 metre East

3+1+1+2+1+1+2+1+1=13
The answer is C

Cookie please.
Australia, the only country in the world to have both it's national animals (the kangaroo and the world's second deadliest bird, the emu) on the menu.

God, I am terrified of our national wildlife. Why can it all disembowel people? :(

I noticed what I'd actually typed after my second edit, but just gave up and figured people would figure out the tuples of 4 i was getting at.

Answer is C. I'm a little disappointed you signed up specifically to ask this question.

Didn't notice that. Maybe we should all edit our posts to a different answer to make the OP feel more at home.

And yes, I would be one of those audience members hitting "D" when asked on the first question of Who Wants to be a Millionairre?

I have seen these questions before, but I love the patriotism about the question, which country are you from? Was it an Australian test?
But indeed yes, the answer is 13, which is C, in this case...
