If the "average age" of today's gamer is mid-thrities, how come....

all I ever here in multi-player or co-op single-player are people that sound under the age of 15? I play a wide variety of games, from shooters to RTS, RPG's, etc. But I have yet to hear or talk to someone that sounds as old as myself (26). Where are all these thirty-somethings that supposedly make up the largest demographic of the gaming market?

I am 40. I mostly play single player games because I grew out of multiplayer games in the 1990s and haven't really gone back. When I play online, which is rarely because I don't have the free time of a 15 year old - I play with my close friends who are mostly my age. I doubt I would bump into most people online.

In my experience, the majority of players online don't have headsets plugged in. Even I mute most of the voices if I have the option when I go online. It also might depend on exactly which game you're playing, or what time of day you choose to go online.

They're all playing single player. They're just better games that cater to their schedule.

because more mature players are content to just quietly play and have fun.

While twelve year olds think that being loud, foul and obnoxious will make people think they're more grown up, because they know what sex is and they say "fuck" all the time. You know, like adults do

HERE! Well... almost, 27.

But all my playmates (the 5 of em) are late 20's early 30's.

I think the Peggle/Farmville crowd speaks for itself. That's obviously an older demographic. I was mainly referring to the Xbox Live/PSN crowd.

Not on the mic, because they find the environment needlessly hostile.

Very few people online seem to use their headsets. I'm guessing most of the older demographic are in that crowd.

Humm, i know it will sound trollish and that people might disagree, but maybe switch to PC if you are looking for old farts? I have the impression that the average PC gamer is older, but it might just be because the console gamers i know are 24 yo kiddos and the PC gamers are my age or older.

Edit: Actually, thinking about it, WoW is a great place to meet old people. Go there, join a "serious raiding guild" and make 30's friends; i made 5-7 acquaintances that way, and two really close friends that i met that way, will go to the wedding of one of them soon :D

Usually it's only 12 year olds who have mics, because they feel the need to blast the eardrums of everyone else with proof that they are mature enough to play COD. Usually in the form of swear words they learned the day before.

These represent a minority of gamers. If you do a separate study on Xbox Live and PSN it is quite possible that these will turn out to have a far lower average age than simply "gamers".

They play LOTRO.
It's not often I chat with someone who's younger than me(I'm 21). Once I played with someone who was 76 years old!
Hell, even the people that I'm sure are kids due to major smiley spam turn out to be 30+.

Just because the majority of people who play video games are in their 30's doesn't mean that they all like playing online all the time with their mics on and constantly communicating.

I know when I was playing Rainbow Six: Vegas online a lot I used to hear quite a few people that sounded 20-40 years of age they didn't talk much, just enough for everyone to know the plan of action and giving information about what they see and where. Whereas in the many CoD multiplayer matches (And Gears of War) I heard very few in favor of the pre-pubecent crowd shouting abuse over the mics and calling anyone who used weapons hackers.

Even on the PC I noticed differences in the crowds, in L4D there was a mix of people aged 12-25 when I was playing that talked actively. Also in TF2 depending on what server I went on it would be full of younger players (Instaspawn + Quake mod enabled) or full of older players (Vanilla spawn times, random crits disabled ect. Usually a private clan hosting the server)

Then there is the fact that for a lot of people (Of all ages) multiplayer isn't their thing so they play offline in single players. I'd take a stab in the dark and assume there are more people playing single player games than are playing multi players consistently (Not counting MMO's since they are often played like single player games by some)

Meh, I'm not really looking for anyone. To be honest, I'm on my way out of gaming. It was cool when I was a kid, but now it's just lame, not to mention the stigma that comes with being 26, married, and still playing video games. Some gamers won't admit it, but it DOES affect how people perceive you.

As for the gaming itself: the tethering of all things to an online account, the constant DLC, $60 games, etc. No thanks. I miss the golden-age of gaming (aka the Sega days).
