If you can't do it, don't mock it?

Hi Escapists,

Recently, I did one of the stupidest thing one can do in the internets. I replied to a comment on [gasp]Youtube![/gasp]. The video i was watching was pretty shit and unoriginal and there is this dude that keep telling everyone is a troll because we criticise the maker of the video while sitting comfortably on our couch or something. His main point is that if we can't put an effort to make something better, then shut up. I replied to his comment, and he said I am a troll because I did not agree to his opinion.

Now, my question is, do you think he got a valid point? If you can't bother to do it, don't criticise it? It is rather annoying to see some lazy bastards that can't be satisfied. But, keep in mind that the content of the video are shit and completely rips off some TV show, down to the same music, sound effect, and catchphrase.

I came from Indonesia, a developing country in South East Asia, famously known as "that country inside Bali" among tourists. We are an underachieving bunch for a long long time, as a google lookup will say among other embarrassing facts, we are colonised by the Dutch for a spectacular amount of time.

Yes, the video is some Indonesians ripping off a popular Korean TV show. We do a lot of ripping off, but thats fine, everybody in the entertainment industry do it. What I am trying to do is discouraging people from being satisfied easily, else we will produce nothing but crap, which we have been doing quite well.

I can't marinate a decent steak, but I think I can tell when the chef just dropped it in the toilet and called it a day.

As long as you aren't using personal attacks against the creator, you're perfectly justified in expressing a negative opinion. I don't know anything about plumbing, but if a guy I hired to fix my faucet floods the house I'm going to criticize him.

It's one of the stupidest arguments out there and it's incredibly annoying. You don't have to be able to do something yourself in order to criticise it. I couldn't cobble together a pair of shoes if I tried, but if I buy a pair and then they fall apart after two days, I don't need to be an expert shoemaker/elf in order to say, "Look, your shoes I bought? They're horrible."

Same thing applies to media. I don't need to be a seven-time Oscar winner in order to say that my cat has coughed up better things than Jack & Jill.

Bottom line: There are no qualifications needed to call out shit when you see shit. Just a sense of taste.

There is some merit to that argument, but often it doesn't hold.

A layperson may not understand everything that went into it, but if it's a disaster, they should be able to recognise that.
