The problem with the past is that our history books only covered the interesting parts. Peasants would have just talked about the royal family and saucy puppet shows like we talk about Paris Hilton and reality TV. I don't think living there would be any more interesting - it'd only be dirtier.
Sure, we have problems now, but 20, 50 and even 200 years ago we had different sets of problems, and personally I prefer the compromises and perks that come with living in the current era. Having higher education and easy access to elaborate works of fiction is a big plus for me - so is living past the age of forty.

You're kidding, right? The Europeans caused way more shit than the Americans ever did. A lot of countries would be worse off today if America didn't sever it's ties with the British government, creating a Federal government. I'd take the somewhat flawed nation state over a highly centralized colonial government any day.
