I've been playing games on PC for as long as I can remember, but about a week ago my brother tells me that a friend of his doesn't want his PS3 anymore. Because my brother already has a PS3, he asks me if I'd like to have it, complete with every game he owns, for free. The only problem with that "every game he has" part is that just like my brother, the guy bought a PS3 for Gran Turismo 5. So I got a PS3 and GT5. Still, free console, awesome.

Now I'd love to hear some recommendations, because other than GT5 and Uncharted, which I've been wanting to play for years now, I don't really know anything else. Please bear in mind that I'm a PC gamer first, so I'm mainly interested in PS3/console exclusives.

I guess I'm looking for third person shooters/action/adventure/rpgs. But anything goes, really. Maybe I'll even try a FPS with a controller.

THE LAST OF US!!!!

DEAR GOD "THE LAST OF US"!

...sorry, I got a little too excited there. I normally am not THE LAST OF US!!!!!!!

BAD Tippy2k2! Sorry, I promise that probably won't happen again.

Valkryia Chronicles is an absolutely excellent tactical RPG and was my favorite PS3 title until "Last of Us" came out (I really like LoU if you haven't noticed). It's similar to most tactical RPG's but is most similar to XCOM (gameplay-wise, no base building) since you have guns, grenades, tanks, etc. You are fighting humans and it's not nearly as difficult as XCOM. However, it has an actual story (and it's a pretty good one too despite being a cliched JRPG).

A lot of people love "Infamous" (open world game with electric super powers). I wasn't a huge fan of it but I'm not big with open world so take that in consideration.

Did I mention "The Last of Us" yet? It's my GotY (and possibly Game of my Life). The gameplay itself is a smidge generic but it gets the job done. The story, characters, Voice Acting, and atmosphere are all top notch. An absolutely brilliant twist on Ze Zombie Apocalypse that I would strongly recommend people get a PS3 to play it.

Infamous series- Guy gets superpowers and fights gangs, secret organizations, and hicks. You can buy the collectors edition for about twenty or so bucks, has both games and all DLC.

God of War- Nice button mashing and puzzle game. I would suggest renting over buying them, you can usually power through one in two or so days.

Heavy Rain- A mystery, action game that plays very similar to the walking dead and The Wolf Among Us.

Killzone series- FPS with a high emphasis on graphics.

The Last of Us just goes without saying.

Yo dawg, Imma suggest you preorder Persona 5 as soon as possible.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Dragon's Crown, yet.

Try these [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.834290-Your-Must-Play-PS3-Games]

My personal favs are MGS ('cos I'm a fanboy) and motorstorm (pretty cool series of off road racers).

Some other games people are batty for are the last of us, journey, flower, flow, little big planet and beyond: two souls.

Some good choices in this thread so far. The Last of Us is, indeed, pretty darned good. I didn't like Uncharted at all, but Naughty Dog impressed me with TLoU.

I've been enjoying a lot of Ninja Gaiden Sigma lately. Camera aside, it may be the most fun hack 'n' slash I've ever played. Every attack feels meaty and powerful, but game still maintains an incredibly quick pace during combat. I bought it for £5, but I'd have been happy if I'd gotten it for full price at release and there are very few games I can say that about.

Nier is a really odd game that everyone should experience. The gameplay is a tad... amateurish? It's not bad[/b] but there are better games out there. But it's just so weird and experimental with it, that you can't help but appreciate it. The plot is similarly weird and experimental (and also depressing as fuck). The basic premise is that you're trying to find a way to cure your daughter's illness in a post-apocalyptic world. From there it spirals into an extremely morally ambiguous story in an incredibly unique setting. This ain't your Daddy's post-apocalypse. And the soundtrack is amazing. It's probably really cheap now.

You probably already know all about Red Dead Redemption. Whilst it doesn't quite live up to the hype, it is an incredibly enjoyable game. The story is good and the sound, animation and physics combine to make gunfights extremely satisfying despite the control system leaving something to be desired.

Still waiting a bit longer to get a PS3 myself but I can heartily recommend the Sly Cooper HD Collection [www.amazon.com/dp/B003O680RM/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=34600277568&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=20109870021731318315&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_3hiyighmx2_b]. Which collects the PS2 trilogy, some of the most fun games I've ever played. If you like them there's also Sly 4 but I haven't gotten to play that yet so can't speak on it.

Nobody's mentioned them yet, but you could have a look at the Dynasty Warriors series. Don't take my word for it though, have a look at let's plays because plenty of people can't stand those games.

Also Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. My brother and I had a lot of fun with it. Again, take a look at gameplay footage or reviews. There's some frustrating stuff in the game, particularly in the first 5 hours or so, that might turn you off.

And GTA V. Didn't particularly get into it, but there's plenty of content in there.

I think every response has covered exactly what you need.

But I would get rid of Gran Turismo 5. I don't think it's worth keeping, even at zero cost. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful game, but it aggravates me to no end. And quite possibly, the only thing worse than being a bad or even a boring game, is being an aggravating game. If you want a fun driving game, get Motorstorm like Omega616 says.
I wish I could remember who told me, but if you get the latest Ratchet and Clank game, Into the Nexus, you get to download Quest for Booty for free. Not to get too confusing, but the chronological order of the Ratchet and Clank Future series is:

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction-->Quest for Booty-->A Crack in Time-->Into the Nexus

If you don't care too much about continuity and absolutely love puzzles, I would jump straight to Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time. It's not all about puzzles, but it's got quite a few.
I'd also like to second the recommendations for Heavy Rain (one of the few games on any platform that actually uses a controller to its maximum ability) and Journey. And you'll probably enjoy the God of War series. Just a hunch.

Oh right, and it's a nice touch being able to change your PS3 background image:
Just choose a decent, high-res image, preferably in 1920 X 1080 (the size doesn't have to match your TV), and copy it to a USB key that's been formatted to FAT32. Any external storage like a USB key, that is 16 GB or smaller (32 maybe?), can be easily formatted to FAT32 on a Windows PC [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcmxZD0PNAY]. Plug that into your PS3, go to Photo, find your USB device, hit the Triangle button, and select Display All. Find your photo and copy it to the PS3 by hitting Triangle and copy.

Now back out, find your image in the Photo menu (it will be in a folder with today's date) and view it by hitting X. Once you're looking at your image (it will be full screen), you can rotate by hitting the R2 triggers. Then hit the Triangle button again, and find the icon Set as Wallpaper. You can crop and zoom to a certain degree.
[hr]
I also recommend searching the PSN store for free Themes. Themes will change your background image and icons. Some Themes will be dynamic, meaning they'll be slightly animated [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpb2MI4gIjs]. You can access/change your background theme in Settings (second from left), Theme Settings (option 7 scrolling down), then hit X, hit X again (it should already be on the option "Theme"). Because of certain games I've purchased, I've got themes for Uncharted, The Walking Dead, Fallout 3, Journey, Peggle, Tomb Raider, etc.

One of my college roommates had a PS3, so that's how I got access to a bunch of exclusives that I wouldn't have otherwise been able to play.

The one that I find myself most wishing that I could play again now is Valkyria Chronicles. Which still kinda impresses me, because when I first played it, I was practically forced to by my roommate because he insisted that I'd like it. I had no initial interest, because at the time I was irrationally opposed to all things even remotely anime-looking. Boy am I glad I let him talk me into playing it, because I love squad-based strategy games, and it shot right up to the top of my favorites list along with games like Jagged Alliance 2 and XCOM.

So yeah... if you have any interest at all in strategy games, give this one a shot. I had a blast with it, and it'd probably be the very first game I'd track down a copy of should I get my hands on a Playstation.

No matter what you pick, be it Infamous with it's superpowered action, be it Ratchet and Clank with it's cartoonish weapon extravaganza, you must not, I repeat you must NOT forget to play Journey.

Well, other than what has been suggested, I guess I'll suggest getting PS+. It'll give you some free games each month. The Feburary offering for PS3 is Payday 2, Metro: Last Light, and Remember Me. You may not even have enough time to play all the games they offer via it, and they're free as long as you remain in PS+. Just a suggestion.

Other than that (trying to avoid repeats), if you haven't played any of the Arkham games, they are worth a look. You also may want to look into the various Playstation Classics on PSN. You can get games like FF7, Wild Arms, Metal Gear Solid, and plenty more for cheap. And if you have a PSP or Vita, play them on the go.

It's not an exclusive, but if you were PC only and now have a console, you really need to play Red Dead Redemption...

Almost all of the major PS3 exclusives are worth your time, but the absolute must-plays for me are Heavy Rain, Journey, and The Last of Us (my game of the generation).

Get Dragon's Crown immediately. It was the best release on any platform in 2013 (I say this as a PC gamer).

Next, Pre-order The Witch and the Hundred Knight.

Finally, (while you're waiting for DC to arrive) check out Journey. These three steps should be considered an extension of your PS4 setup.

Honourable mentions: Ninja Gaiden Sigma Black, DoA5:U, The Last Of Us.

I'd suggest Journey, The Unfinished Swan and Papa Y Yo(this one may have been released on Steam). All three are indie and may not fall into the categories you suggested, but they've been some of the most meaningful games to me on that system.

If you enjoy JRPGs and like the idea of crafting items to use in battle, then I would recommend the Atelier Alchemist trilogy.
