It used to be that the few of us who were known as nerds or geeks were fashionably unconscious, smart, and social outcasts. And we didn't care.

But now it seems the term "geek" has been hijacked by hipsters wanting to break away from the old archetypes. Everywhere now I see "ironic" retro gaming t-shirts, jewelry made from video game cartridges, store bought steampunk gear and worse, being worn by the kind of people I spent my childhood years playing videogames to get AWAY from. You know, the fucking Beautiful People.

So I propose a new word for the socially malnourished outcasts I associate with. Let's have some suggestions!

Lets continue to be geeks/nerds and they can continue to be hipsters and I can continue to hate them with every fiber of my being.

the fact that gaming in general is becoming more accepted is something of a good thing that we should embrace rather then reject and just rebrand ourselves to become outcasts. if you want to be an outcast all your life then go ahead but tbh i wouldn't actually mind if it became more socially accepted as long as we dont become so mainstream that we start becoming "novelties" and are constantly advertised at like small children are

Sounds like you're still living in 1985.

The time of the "pale, socially retarded gamer living in his parents basement" stereotype is coming to an end. If they want to join in some of our hobbies, it means they're willing to try to accept us. We should accept them.

Wow, you look like you mind waaaay too much how other people behave. Relax, dont try to be an outcast. Ignore people who you dont like, that way you arent giving them the honor to have an influence on your mood.

Really? This is something you're actually upset about?

Alright then.. Well.. I don't really see what's wrong with people wearing geek clothes and calling themselves geeks.. But maybe I'm just not as geek as you, I guess you were a geek before it was cool.

Hah...

They may be hipsters but they still advance the causes of the Video Game industry so why should we bar the door to the "Un-Fit" geeks? We will always have our inside jokes and tighter knit communities that they will likely never join but that is of their own accord, not backlash from the gaming community for their "incursion"

Hey, at least they aren't actually pale basement-dwellers like the normal geek stereotype.

Why do you like geeks being social outcasts, again?

The problem is, they're not, were just the current flavour-of-the-month.

Two years ago, they were all emos, before that they were all yuppies. Once they get sick of being ironically geeky, they'll move on and leave us like the emo kids; mocked and taken out of context forever more.

It not even that they're actually gamers.

You don't even know, man. I was the first person to buy an ENIAC and put it in my DnD room for all my other geek friends to use.

But then Bill Gates came along and became a billionaire from being a geek, so everyone else wanted to be like us. I switched to being a homeless person because that hasn't gotten cool yet. They were cramping my style, bro.

You're overly sensitive and far too critical with the way people dress and act, do you know anything about them personally, or are you just holding out on the "well they're probably boring because they dress like X"?

So you would rather be the type of elitist snob that you tried to avoid? Why not just return to being the "geek" that you once were and the ideal of not giving a crap about what everyone else is doing?

I often make jokes about being an anti-social nerd in a self-depreciating kind of way cause although I lived the archetype for ages I'm much more "Normal" now and in truth I enjoy it more.

In fact it kinda works in my benefit having the geek background cause not only can I get away with some really dark self depreciating jokes I have a big chunk of odd info stuck in my head to the point where some of my friends call me "Google" because I "Know everything" apparently. You would also be amazed how a few lifestyle changes and a big chunk of self confidence can change how people see you.

Don't be scared of these newcomers embrace it and help them along like the newbs they are.

Malnourished social outcasts this is your chance to become Malnourished social leaders! Rise up! Take what is your right! It is your destiny! (continued motivational expressions)

But being elitist is all I have LEFT!
