I was really excited for this game. Any fan will tell you time and time again that the Mega Drive Sonic games are the best and I honestly cannot disagree. They wove a fine line between blistering speed and careful platforming and posed a serious threat to Mario. But while the plumber leaped fantastically into the third dimension, sonic had a decent start and has just been flailing around in mid-air like an eagle with only one wing. Sega recently acknowledged this and have attempted to create a successor to the originals, which seems like a good idea at first but, sadly, I am disappointed.

I like that they're taking a step backward to try and advance, Megaman did it and it worked, but they're just being so careful not to make any changes to the originals. The power-up shields from sonic 3 have gone, and they're just using all the old enemies. Their excuse for the enemy problem is their awful attempt to simplify the plot, which should be a good thing, since sonic plot's aren't always considered their strong points (Off-Topic: was I the only person who liked Sonic 06's plot), but this is just stupid. Dr. Eggman (and no, not even for a bit of nostalgia, their not calling him Robotnik) has decided to rebuild all his old creations, but due to his (and this makes me sad) Budget cuts, some of them don't do all the same things or something along those lines.

But the real kick in the teeth for me is the level design. The first revealed level was Splash Hill, which I can stand, giving the fans some nostalgia is good, but drowning them in it is stupid. The levels are:
Splash Hill
Casino Street *cough casino night cough*
Lost Labyrinth, Which they claim actually IS labyrinth zone from sonic 1 but now it's ruined.
Mad Gear *cough metropolis cough*
and E.G.G station which I guess is going to be like death egg in sonic 2, just the final boss.
Now the things I said in my "discrete" coughing aren't my assumptions, they're pretty much fact. Look at ANY leaked image and you'll see that the stages are identical in appearance only with HD graphics. Couldn't they have come up with SOMETHING original?

I realise now that I've written quite a lot and it may seem like I'm ranting, but I'm not trying to. I'm simply expressing my disappointment, and hope that Sonic colours will be good enough to keep me from becoming one of the Sonic haters that prowl the Internet in search of Fans to flame and News of upcoming sonic games to ***** about.

BTW, well done if you actually read it all!

Are they still going with the Episodic thing?

If they are, maybe they'll try different ideas with each one? Or would that just make too much sense for Sonic team? >>

Hmmm...

Actually a decent point about the level design there. I probably will end up buying it, but the more I think about it... This is just a port!

Eh well this would be better in the "User reviews" section. But hey your new (WELCOME!!)

Now on topic. I have never been into the sonic games, Yet its been a long time.. and it hasn't survived as well as Mario. So I would expect this from more recent games. They are trying to not copy anyone while get the old fans they have lost back. I think thats the reason for all the old levels.

I don't understand why they think remaking old games instead of making actually GOOD new ones is a good idea myself, but whatever. The 2D Sonic will sell more then the last couple of awful 3D ones. Of course, I didn't play much of the originals myself, but I can understand the anger.

I'm sure there is an NHS joke to be had here.

It's strange really. Whenever I expressed my concerns that SEGA would not be doing anything new or innovative with the level design in this new Sonic title, I would get a load of Sonic fans assuring me that this would not be the case. However reading that level line up just saddens me.

Also, I fucking hate the Labyrinth zone. Water in Sonic can just fuck off.

'Please do new stuff in Sonic!'

No. Die in a fire.

Sonic the Hedgehog is at its best... IT'S BEST... when it's sidescrolling speedrunning crazy platforming action.

Some game setups don't translate well to 3d. Sonic's one of them.

For the record this really is something you should blog.

And I'm not a huge fan of Sonic to begin with. I always found them to be awkward games to play.

Hearing the plot for the first time made me think that they're just recycling old elements in lieu of inovation, but I'm willing to give it a chance. That's what free trails are for. BTW, I read the whole thing.
