Well, it's about that time. About that time to get swept up in the excitement for electronics I don't truly need. What a first world problem to have.

Anyway, my 2gb 770 is getting a little long in the tooth. I will say, It's surprised me by giving me much better performance than I would expect in games like The Witcher 3 and DOOM, but I'm nowhere near to taking full advantage of my 144hz monitor as I used to be. I've been eyeing the 1070 for awhile and I don't see prices dropping anytime soon. Any of you jump on the 1070 wagon? What manufacturer did you choose? And finally, you guys running it at 1080p or 1440p?

Part of me wants to stick with my 1080p 144hz monitor and get all the frames, but I've never played at 1440 and I think 1440p 60hz is another route I could take. Thanks for the input!

I'm considering some upgrading as well. I may get the more budget friendly AMD 480 with 8 Gig or RAM. Lot of scalping going on right now. MSRP is only supposed to be $240 so refuse to spend more on it.

Good place to compare specs: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/ If you click on the GTX 1070, it will take you to a couple of charts on comparative price and performance.

Does you monitor support one or other manufacturer more? Gsync and something else.. don't recall what they're called off hand.

Yeah the 480 is a total steal. The performance per dollar is awesome. I asked here just because I figured there's a lot of enthusiasts on this forum and I was curious how they have their rig set up. The 1070 is definitely in my near future. I'm just not sure whether I'd rather stay with my 1080p 144hz or step up to a 1440p monitor. I don't want to 1070 to age too quickly and then I'm getting crap fps at 1440 in a year.

Maybe in a year the price of a 1070 will come down, get another and SLI. Crossfire on AMD is not supposed to be as good so if I go 480, that's it.

Yeah maybe. I've never bothered with SLI before as I've heard enough horror stories to stay away. It might be a fun experiment though. I'd consider a 480 myself but I'm partial to team green and I don't really see the 480 as a significant enough bump in performance. I'd rather spend a little more and get that night and day difference

Co-worker's arrived yesterday. If the benchmark page I linked to you is to be believed, the 480 is NOT faster than the GTX 970 he was replacing it with. Today he comes in, asks if I'd buy it from him. My thought: he tried it out and found it really isn't faster: he is out $240 for nothing. I bought it from him as $240 is a lot less then the prices I still see for a new 970, let alone a 1070 and even a bit less than most 1060s with which it competes.

I anticipate it will be about 50% more powerful than my 7970 and use less power, run cooler. This may be a bump I need to enjoy my computer for another 3 years.

Will I ever crossfire (which cannot be done with a 1060)? Dunno. Depends how spoiled rotten I am, which is a lot! :)

If you got it, buy the 1070. It is killing the 480 in benchmarks.
