I'm Having Problems With Steam and Xbox Live.

I've been using Steam for a while now, and it has been working perfectly since I first started back when Portal was free. My Xbox Live connection has also been working flawlessly since I first got it. Just today, my brother downloaded Steam and started downloading games. Everything was fine, until about an hour after all his games finished downloading. Steam gave me a message saying that:

Steam said:
Could not connect to the Steam network.

It appears that you are not currently connected to the Internet, or that your Internet connection is not configured correctly for Steam.

Either check your connection and click 'Retry', or start Steam in 'Offline Mode'.
And I couldn't connect to Xbox Live, and after testing the connection, it told me that Xbox Live needs an MTU setting of 1364 or more. I have no idea what that means or how to fix it, but it fixed itself, and an hour later my Xbox Live was working, but Steam continues to not work for me.

Can anyone offer any help?

I'd say your internet connection isn't working but that would bring up the question of how are you using these forums.

Exactly. I'm having absolutly no problems going on forums, or checking email, or even going on the steam store in my browser. But when I try to launch the client, that comes up.

I dunno, but I'm gonna say this:

Playing TransFormers: War for Cybertron, I kept getting booted from multiplayer. I checked my signal strength and found out it was at a horrible, awful 40 odd percent. Enough to connect, but not enough stable throughput to play.

Might be related to your problem, dunno. Just throwing out ideas.

I think that might just be the game. It does that to me often times too.

you could try to re-download steam. For xboxlive I dont know.
That shouldn't affect any of the games I've got installed already?
DONT. if you uninstall steam, you have to uninstall ALL of the steam games or steam wont reinstall. i tried that once.
you do? oh sorry I didn't know. :(

You mean T:WFC? Yeah, I've heard a lot of that, but it's so fucking new that unfortunately I haven't been able to find a lot IT support for it. I've read through a lot of flame wars whether it's the game or the console, the inevitable xbox vs. sony vs. pc, but I have my PS3 in my room, and it's gotta pass through two walls to the router. Now, as we all know, wireless signals move in straight lines, and that means that if a machine and the access point are on either side of a wall, but twelve feet apart, the signal has to go through essentially twelve feet of wall to get to it, which is my case, but not exclusively my case which is why I suggested it here. Even if it's not wireless, a bottleneck could be causing it.

BUT, back on track, when I moved my PS3 to another room with a better vantage point, my strength went up to 100% and I was able to get my ass properly handed to me without lagging or dropping out.

...damn soldier class tanks.....

I also have problems connecting, but only with Counter-strike:source. The issue is I can't find a server that will respond. I found one once but I can't locate it again.

Have you tried switching it off and on again?

Seriously, it's probably just a router failure. If you're in England or the US, imagine how many TVs just got turned off in disgust, followed by servers going up.

That's possibly the cause. That or the blasted heat.

Perhaps the local Steam server is undergoing maintenance?

I probably have to switch my router off then on. I tried Xbox Live and Steam this morning and neither worked, so I'm going to reset stuff.

Check your firewall settings.
Then double-check them.
Then set it to "always ask" and see what happens when you try using Steam/Xbox Live.
Do what needs to be done.
If still stuck, unplug router, leave for five minutes, retry.
If still stuck, contact expert.
