I'm looking for map-reading kind of games

Hello all!

So, I've been playing Arma 3 (and playing some missions of the Operation Flashpoint game), and boy, I love interacting with the map. It's a great brain exercise reading the geography and routes of the country, where best to position yourself, while also thinking of the enemy's point of view. Either for myself or in behalf of my squad, I love the vast openness of the game (since Flashpoint) and the map is such a cerebral acessory. I may suck at shooting, but I can read the land!

Thing is, I also like to write things down while playing. Games that require this sort of data gathering, like detective games or hacking games (Hacknet...), even some RPGs(Morrowind comes to mind) thrill me to no end.

So, mixing these two, Silent Hunters, the submarine game comes to mind. But for the latest entry, Silent Hunters 5, there's a ton of negative reviews on Steam, most tell of a bugged, hopeless game.

I ask you then, do you know games where map navigation, prior or during the action, is key?

You could check out Miasmata on steam.

I've never played it, I don't know how good it is, I just saw a video about it as a one-off in the Best Friends Play Shitstorm a couple of years ago (apparently there are horror elements to the game, but they never got to them).

It's basically a survival game, you explore and gather materials, but there's a big map making element to the game where you have to create your own maps using "realistic" cartography, and use triangulation to find your position while moving around the island.

Like I said, I have no idea how well any of this works, but it has mostly positive reviews on steam so feel free to look it up. It seems like the kind of thing that would scratch your map reading itch.

I have a feeling this isn't exactly what you have in mind, but there's a Nintendo DS series called Etrian Odyssey which is a dungeon crawler. However you have to draw your own dungeon map on the 2nd screen to not get lost (much as you had to back in ye olde days of PC RPGs).

They put a lot of work into making the mapping features usable and pretty detailed, so check it out. Be warned it's very anime though!

Sunless Sea is pretty good, if you like a very very frustrating Rouge-like Lovecraftian FTL adventure on the dark blue seas.
