Importing Mass Effect 2 to Mass Effect 3, facial reconstruction?

So I was talking to my roommate, who just got on to Mass Effect, and he asked a good question.

When you import your Shepard from ME2 to 3, do you think there will be some story element as to why you can change your Shepard's look again or will it just be fixed as the import, making a facial construction Shepard only if you start clean slate, no import?

The former would seem a little too contrived. And I would like to think that if people played through all of ME2 with their Shepard, they should be happy to continue using that character. Changing class should be allowed though, no sense in people continuing to play the same way if they don't want to, change up their play style, enjoy tweaks to classes with their imported character.

That's my views, wondered what the Escapist thought, or any scenarios they would like to share

I agree with you on both points. Gamers shouldn't do a facial reconstruction again, since it's already been used in ME2. They should be able to change up their class.

Other than the odd story reason I believe the point of it in ME2 was because the facial feature was so vastly improved, and scars removed, that it was thought to be a good idea to give the opprtunity to change.

if that doesn't ake sense I've been drinking for three hours. Sorry.

Probably will stay as is though, can't imagine them killing off and resurrecting Shep another time.

I hope there is the option of keeping your face. It really would be a pain to try and recreate the same thing and not get it perfect.

Best way would be to let the player change their Shepard's class, gender and appearance if they want.

But don't bother coming up with a story element to justify it. There's no need.

Don't need it. If someone doesn't like the face for the Shepard they used for two games before this, that's their problem, not Bioware's.

I'd like them to add the option at least... this is a case where gameplay sort of trumps game world logic.. What they SHOULD add though, is the ability to import your face right into the editor... Currently in ME2, you can't slightly alter the face, you can only completely recreate it.

The ability to add a proper chin to my vanguard shep that I neglected to give him in ME1 would be nice.... GG Matthew Shepard - you chinless angry bastard.

actually yeah, this is still a big debate between me and my buds...

Will Bioware finally just cement the need for you to play an old character? or will they make some contrived reason for you to have a face change?
this should have been a poll!

I liked being able to change what my shepard looks like. I thought it have nothing to do with the story they just wanted you to be able to change your shepard if you were unhappy with your old one but wanted to keep their back story.

I'm not going to need to change my character, but I'm sure they'll have something in place to let you do it. It's not that outlandish to think that in that future, facial reconstruction is pretty easy to do to anyone who wants it.

i wouldn't change my characters appearance, she's grown on me and anything else up to this point would be weird, my Shepard is the real Shepard now regardless of whoever that fellow on the cover of ME2 is.

Also, do they really need to add in a reason at all? all they need to do is add a facial reconstruction thingy-ma-bob in the Medical wing of the Normandy and you can change your face however you want without having to shoe horn in some reason for your Shepards facial change.

They could go all Saints Row 2 and put loads of plastic surgery clinics all around the galaxy... Oh ME3 needs moar hairstyles rather than the legion of short brown haired Sheps currently available (FemShep has a little more variety but come on Bioware needz moar hairstyles)

I'd like to at least get some new hairdo (and facial hair or makeup) options to choose from, even if I'm importing my old character.

Yeah that sounds good, I'd change my Shep's hairstyle after every mission to reflect her erratic personality. Or something.

I don't know, I think if you are going to stick to your continuity guns, then you can't say it's not okay to change something superficial, like your looks, but it is okay to change a part of your core being.

"Oh look! It turns out I'm a biotic after all! I must have been a late bloomer. And why they hell can't I use my soldier abilities anymore? Oh well, at least I still have my same old handsome face."

Personally, I think they should just take that aspect out of the story. I think they wrote themselves into a corner trying to come up with a good reason your face changed in 2. Just do that stuff before the story starts, and don't even address it in the story. It's not like when you re-play ME the second time as a female instead of a male, everyone in the game goes, "Wait a minute, I'm have serious Déjà vu, only I'm having this feeling you were a guy in my memory."

I understand story continuity is important, but a video game is partially a story you make yourself. There are lots of crazy things that happen in ME that require us to suspend out disbelief. I think we could all handle a face lift in a galaxy where a jelly fish is Dirty Harry.

I liked being able to redo the face when i started the second game if only to take advantage of the new graphics. When I first loaded without doing anything it looked terrible. The next one could do something as simple as the first game where all your records were mysteriously lost. :p

EDIT: And you don't need to go looking for surgeons. Remember you had the opportunity to build your own personal facial reconstruction machine on you ship. :D

I'm not going to use it, as I'm okay with the standard ManShep, but, hey, I think they should allow both without really justifying it.

I mean, even when people import characters, there's a perfect chance they'll want to play the new game in a different way. And, as for the looks - imagine for a second ME3 having a normal character customization system. I'd guess many people would want to start from scrath with the facial appearance of Shepard.
