TLDR FOR THE IMPATIENT: Just read the title.
Recently, I finished watching the anime version of Trigun. I quite enjoyed it, and for what it was, it did a stellar job of adapting *most* of the manga, and delivering a concise, easy to understand plot. But it ain't perfect. Like the title says, what ways would you improve a good show or film, adaptation or otherwise?
In Trigun's case, while most things are implied and quick enough to pick up on, I would have liked to see a bit more direct interaction between Knives and Vash, or more of an explanation about the SEEDS colonists still living above the clouds. Stuff like that which feels very significant, but only gets the most bare bones mention in the anime. Hell, Vash being a Plant is only hinted at in one episode and left ambiguous, until Knives brings it up casually, ruining any sort of reveal. If the show was given, say, three more episodes just to tighten up loose ends, it could have benefited the story well I think.
The shame is that it was obvious the show was on a tight budget. Most of the action scenes were still shots, or repeated footage, which really started to bother me after a while. Of the three Adult Swim space westerns, (Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Trigun), it may have more story going for it than Outlaw Star, but it just lacks the production values of Bebop, and it's a shame.
Still, good series that could use some work.
