Story goes, I needed someway to put myself through college, lacking the background and amazing grades required to get in on scholarships alone. So I joined the Army National Guard, a perfect fit for a kid who's been in a miliary family and environment all his life (And who's father is currently a recruiter for the National Guard). Full college tuition, a few hundred dollars a month, and $20,000 dollars when I come out of my training.

So anyways. After a long wait since joining in March, the time has finally come. I leave on October 8th. 10 weeks of fun and adventure. And then a few more weeks of job training for my position as a Parelegal Specialist.

Any advice?

Go topless again.

In all seriousness, you'll be away from the interblarg for 10 weeks to learn how to kill! Actually sounds fun.

Try to become the "leader" in the camp, but make sure you don't be an asshole while doing it. Make friends. Don't look your drill sarge in the eye, and remember, if you end up hating Basic, the fastest way to get out is to pass it.

It's the National Guard right?
I'm not an expert but that means you stay in the country doesn't it?
So no roadside bombs or anything?
Oh and you should so be topless for as much of your service as possible.

No, National Guards units get sent to war all the time. They act as a reserve unit as well as a national defense force. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that I have college first (a contract saying that since I scored over a 50 on the ASVAB entrance test, they cannot ship me anywhere as long as I am enrolled in college) I might have been going to Iraq Afghanistan, since the unit I am attached to is shipping.

Lucky meeeee!

I might actually end up being a leader, since I was in RSP for so long. I joined in March, and every month, I went to a pre-basic training 'training' place where they would PT soldiers getting ready to leave, and teach them a few very basic things, along with some drill and ceremony stuff.

Though I'm definetly not the most overzealous of people, so I will probably avoid being an asshole if I can. (Sweet avatar btw.)

No worries. They can't send me anywhere for atleast four years while I'm in college. There'll be plenty of shirtless photos for you all to enjoy when I return. Who knows, maybe they'll be even sexier!

(I know, sounds impossible... but you never know!)

Nontheless; you keep your wits about you. Like anything else; just the 'good life' rules apply.

Be kind, but honest. Learn everything you can. When it's time to draw the line, do it, but don't kick anyone in the dick until it's absolutely necessary.

Wait the US economy is in pandemonium and from history we see every dip in the US economy is followed shortly by war and your getting shipped out?

Nah, I'm sure you'll be fine, I'm thinking about doing the same before i head to university.

Well maybe you'll finally have chest hair when you get back. Maybe.
What does this mean for the escapist? Is it going to be absolutely no contact whilst you're in basic? 'cause that would be great terrible... just terrible.

Nope, no Escapist or internet for 10 whole weeks. Maybe more depending on my AIT (Advanced Individual Training).
