You've been having trouble sleeping lately haven't you? Or maybe you've always had trouble with sleep, falling asleep or the visions that await you in the land of dreams? It's a fairly common problem, but it seems to be worsening with each passing day, barely a night goes by without the ticking of the clock as your constant companion, the image of the ceiling above your head burnt into your mind. If you listen carefully, you can almost hear a voice calling you behind the noises of the night. I wonder Insomniac... what will happen when you can no longer resist the call? I have a feeling you just might find out soon enough...

Righto, the basic premise for this rp is that your characters are children and teenagers who have been struck by increasingly worse insomnia in conjunction with a strange voice calling to them. Whether they answered the call willingly or find themselves unable to resist, the characters are taken to the Realm of Dreams, an ever shifting environment stalked by by demons and other entities would see them trapped forever. Of course being in the land of dreams, the characters will each have their own spirit guardian and possess abilities to impose their will on the world around them as they attempt to survive and hopefully escape back to reality.

The Realm of Dreams is a maelstrom of change, an endless battle between chaos and order fought by entities few mortals can comprehend. When everything is running smoothly, dreamers never actually set foot there; rather they are suspended in separate dream spheres until they safely return to the mortal plane. Unfortunately, if their dream sphere is to shatter, the dreamer will be stranded while their mortal body wastes away in a coma. If their body dies before they can return they will be forever trapped or worse return to inhabit a corpse. Thankfully time works differently in the Realm of Dreams, a single night on the mortal plane is days in the Realm of Dreams, all the same, it is not encouraged to dally on finding your way back home.

Everything in the Realm of Dreams is run by willpower, emotions and imagination; the most powerful entities create dreams and warp the landscape as they please while lesser parasites feed off emotions and invade dreams to sustain themselves. As mortals you will not have access to the full powers wielded by the entities born of the Realm of Dreams but as you spend time there you will find you have an affinity for certain powers that will help you on your journey. You will also be accompanied by a Spirit Guardian, effectively an avatar of your willpower which will serve to protect and guide you.

The Story Teller: Responsible for the creation and protection of every dream sphere in the realm, a feat that requires massive power. Unfortunately his task takes up all his attention leading to the southern plains he presides over being infested with parasitic demons who meet very little resistance as they feast.

The Conductor: Oversees all transportation in and out of the Realm of Dreams from the bleak lands known only as Terminus located in the far north. All mortals hoping to escape travel to Terminus to catch a train that supposedly waits there to take them back their world. The road to Terminus is long and plagued with entities that would rather see you trapped forever and for reasons unknown, The Conductor never moves to protect travellers.

Somnium of The Dark: A horrendously warped demonic entity that relentlessly sends his legions to disturb dreams. While ordinary dreams produce emotions, demons can feed far more successfully from nightmares and thus whenever a previously normal dream suddenly becomes a nightmare, he is behind it. On occasion he will shatter dream spheres to provide wandering mortals for his legions to feast upon; this is the fate that has befallen you. His demons roam all over the land but Somnium himself is rarely seen.

The Anomaly: An entity of pure chaos with innumerable forms, the Anomaly exists purely to destroy any sort of order. It is responsible for endlessly shifting environments and it is said that the war in the Realm of Dreams will never end because the Anomaly will never allow peace.

The Warders: Soldiers of order, the Warders take humanoid forms and patrol the realm of dreams battling demons and anything they feel disturbs order. They cannot be considered protectors however as they have been known to destroy anything they feel will disrupt the natural order. Many lost mortals have met their deaths on the end of the Warder?s silver blades.

The Dream Catchers: Great spinning wheels with trailing tentacles and innumerable eyes, Dream Catchers prowl the edges of the realm. Supposedly they serve to prevent demons from breaking free into the mortal realm but they possess a great hunger that compels them to devour mortals just as quickly. The only route they do not guard is the train out of Terminus, the reason all lost mortals must travel there.

Demons: The servants of Somnium of The Dark they come in all shapes and sizes with differing power levels between them. They can generally be placed in two categories. Parasitic Demons who feast on emotions and invade dreams and the Hellfire Legion, great armoured demons who battle the Warders endlessly.

Spirits: When a demon no longer serves Somnium they become classed as Spirits instead. Spirits do not possess the ability to influence dreams and have lost their intimidating appearance but now they have free will and many will choose to assist mortals. As opposed to the brute force of the demons, Spirits are better known for tricks and illusions and are generally distrusted throughout the Realm of Dreams.

Lost Mortals: Mortals who are trapped in the Realm of Dreams tend to have very short lifespans if they attempt to survive alone, easy prey for Demons, Dream Catchers and even Warders. However, some communities of them do exist, protecting themselves through both the powers they have developed and alliances with helpful spirits. They will not age past the point at which they were taken into the Realm Of Dreams, effectively making them as immortal as other the other entities provided they can avoid confrontation.

Name:

Age: Between 10-16 is preferred but I will accept younger if I believe it will work. Older individuals are not usually taken as they have more control over their emotions and fears but I will also accept older characters where this not the case due to things like phobias or disorders.

Original Appearance: How you looked in the real world and how you will look when you initially appear in the realm of dreams. You don?t need to go insanely detailed if you don?t want to, just stuff like clothes, height, hair and eye colour , enough so that it?s possible to imagine your character.

Dream Appearance: The longer you spend the land of dreams the harder it becomes to maintain your original form and many lost mortals find themselves shifting to adopt traits from memories and long forgotten dreams. This doesn?t happen to everyone but your character may develop unnatural eye colours or even mechanical limbs, provided it doesn?t get too crazy.

Personality: It should be taken into account when writing your personality that demons are drawn to fear, anger and misery more than other emotions. People who dwell on the past are more likely to attract memory fragments replaying or even forcing them relive events. Apathy is effectively a poison to the Dream Realm where everything is part of the larger scheme and is constantly battling to survive. As a result of this the world will appear to wilt and die around indifferent characters and other entities will be confused by their presence. Conformist or very organised individuals are less likely to attract the ire of the Warders while people with a rebellious nature may be hunted. Demons cannot feed on happiness and compassion and thus try to avoid them where possible, as result of the air around good natured characters is vibrant and full of life.

Dream Powers: Usually linked to interests or abilities in real life, your character will start off with simple powers of their choice which will develop as time passes.
Spirit Guardian: The avatar of your willpower while you are in the dream realm, it may take any form you wish provided they aren?t too massive or small. Whether they have the power of speech is up to you.

Backstory: Think carefully about your character?s backstory as elements from it may well turn up in the Dream Realm. Any important events and people should be mentioned here if possible.

Hmm I like the story so far, I'm assuming through magic plot devices we'll all be having the same dream and thus be a party? Or least be able to interact with each other?
I already have an idea of what spirit guardians to make.

Thanks for your interest! The way I'm looking at it is that when you normally sleep you are taken into a dream while in this rp the characters have been dragged into the world where dreams are made at the same point. This means during their journey they may be dragged into the dreams they find drifting about. That's why I'm going to take particular interest in character backstories for things to turn up while they travel.

I'll be putting up info later on how things work in the Realm of Dreams and what entities are responsible for what.

No thanks, I already struggle with it in the real life. Great concept though.

Sounds quite interesting, I could have a lot of fun with something like this; I'm most definitely interested! Looking forward to reading the full back-story (if there is one).

This sounds really cool. I'm definitely interested.

Also, I've been a long time lurker and have checked out a few RPs, so please don't be put off by the fact that this is my first post. I promise you won't see anything "amateurish" from me if this happens and I join.

Question.

Would it be acceptable to have a character who doesn't want to escape this land of dreams?
To balance things out he'd still happily help everyone escape if they wanted.

That's perfectly acceptable, I was wondering if someone would make a character like that, should be interesting.

Wow. This seriously sounds great. I'm gonna start really thinking on a character. The one I initially thought of also probably wouldn't mind the dream realm too much, but if he comes too close to freebiewitz's character I'll change him up.

I am officially eagerly awaiting a character sheet template.

I can't see why there can't be two of us.
Though if you'd like to see where the overlap could be here's a few dot points on my character concept.

1. He likes the dream realm more as a form of escapism.
2. Is on his computer all day long etc, teen generic basement dweller without the basement.
3. I'd like to think his spirit guide will be a mouse, not a squeaking mouse more of a clicker.
4. His dream realm powers would involve summoning video game elements, perhaps not the characters themselves but elements such as equipment from Zelda games, power ups from platformers, long range communications and radar from FPS games etc.

Righto I've finished up the character template, I'll add it to this post as well as putting it in the OP.

Name: Alan Wallus

Age: 15

Original Appearance: Thin, somewhat short with a slightly hunched back. Often wears crinkled if somewhat clean shirts with pop-culture references on them. Generic jeans and sneakers are included of course. His face as is common with his age is filled with pimples.

Dream Appearance: Less pimples if any at all with his posture straight and correct with his clothes being in pristine condition. Taller and seemingly more imposing and confident.

Personality: A somewhat depressed individual that laments his loneliness and lack of power and respect that he receives from his peers making him shy and somewhat cowardly. To cope he pretends that he does not care and spends most if not all his free time on the internet playing video games.

Dream Powers: Video game vision. Can instantly see his own health bar, he may monitor his 'statistics' as well as his allies. He also has access to a mini-map (Though admittingly it is limited, some objects may not appear on it at all.) Can also see the statistics of certain items, objects etc. May even see important objects and people highlighted in his vision.

Spirit Guardian: A giant paperclip with large eyes that flies around on a piece of paper. Doesn't actually speak but can vocalize itself by summoning 'speech bubbles'.

Backstory: Alan Wallus has a simple upbringing with an average family. His school life involves bullies many of which had made his life a living hell. Not wanting to worry his parents he never spoke of them. His shy nature had sprung from this. The main offender that had followed him from pre-school all the way to high school was one William Wakes, a large imposing fellow that often assaulted Alan verbally learning long ago that physical violence could leave evidence which of course would get him into trouble.

I voice great interest in this! I'll try and get a character sheet up pronto! Quick question: How far can the dream appearance differ from the original appearance?

I am very interested. Here's my submission.

Name: Alex Darien

Age: 13

Original Appearance: A slim young man with green eyes and messy brown hair. His face has some pimples around his cheeks and forehead, but not much. His clothing is simple, usually just plain, single-color shirts and jeans. Also has glasses and braces.

Dream Appearance: Similar to his original appearance, but more cleaned up. His hair is unnaturally neat and ordered, his face is clear, and he loses his braces, but not his glasses. His glasses are now gold, rather than the plain steel they were originally. The word 'pristine' comes to mind looking at him, everything about him is now scrubbed and new (at the very least seemingly new).

Personality: Alex was always far too serious for his age. He was neat and ordered as well. He was the kind of kid who would line up his action figures in neat rows on his shelf, but rarely actually play with them. Alex felt very much distanced from his peers and became a very introverted kid. He would often spend afternoons sitting down with a book, letting his fantasies run wild, rather than try to meet new people. Alex always dwelt too much on mistakes he'd made, and rarely forgave himself for making them.

Dream Powers: Reorganize- Alex reorganizes the battlefield, redeploying allies and enemies to new positions.

Spirit Guardian: Tome- A rather large and knowing book, Tome speaks when open and is quiet when closed, though always aware of what is going on. Tome has tendency to ramble and can be quite dull at points.

Backstory: Alex was a fairly regular kid. He grew up in a normal, middle-class house, took part in several sports at a young age, and was on good terms with the kids in his neighborhood. However, none of this seemed to really help Alex connect with his peers. There always seemed to be some obstacle between him and them. He became a very alone child, not to say lonely, necessarily. Alex found solace in books and his studies, which helped to turn him into the overly serious young boy he is today. He cultivated a sharp mind and quick wit.
