This time i did use the search button, came up with nothing. And i intend not to be offensive, so lets see if i can not fail this time.

Maybe this is just me, but i find i have a distaste for most rap, mainly because most of it is ego stroking and people trying to prove they're gangsta (maybe they should be robbing people not rapping). I mean sure there is the fact that some if it is people in less than fortunate living situations trying to get out of they're life with music, and rapping about what they know, but i digress.

A small while ago i was told to check out a band called "Flobots" so naturally i whipped up the Limewire to see what was what, and what i found amazed me. I found rap...but not just any gangsta rap, this rap had something different. It spoke to me. I felt almost physically moved by this music. I love how its all about the things going on in our world today, the hurricane that hit New Orleans, or the issue of racism in the american south. I got to enjoy some real perspective on the world rather than just the standard materialistic "my d(@* is bigger than your d!*&" (as my buddy Killian put it) rap.

The point is this. I want people to listen to this music before they post if possible, and;

A)Tell me if they know of more music like it

B)Tell me if They like it, or at least what they think of it

C)Tell me if this Thread is just another failure like my last two attempts

Personally i just cant get enough of this stuff, my current favorite song by Flobots is Anne Braden, partly because of what it's about and partly cuz i am an aspiring bassist and i enjoy the riff.

Brother Ali, Atmosphere, J5, Blackalicious, Lateef, Lyrics Born, Michael Franti, Talib Kweli I could go on & on. There are plenty of great rap artists out there, it just requires some digging to find them. Like any other genre of music it has many different faces. Not heard of Flobots *goes to "borrow" some off the Interweb*

Agree with above (Phillosophic), there are a lot of great rap artists. Generally you have to look just below the thin layer of crappy popular rap. (Even some of those artists stretch themselves a bit sometimes.)

Check out The Roots. They're awesome. Also, second on Common. His album "Be" is one of my favorites, as long as you can cut out that awful song he does with John Mayer.

P.O.D. does kinda this rap with amazing lyrics, good ones about todays youth and other problems in the world, with a kind of hint of rock in it. I find it is a very good mix of the two.

I totally agree with you on Flobots, specifically the song "handlebars".

But the most inspirational rap song is definitely "Electro Livin'" by Akala.

Apologies in advance for the poor grammar with the lyrics, it seems they were the only ones available at this time.

Chorus

young money love money blood money right
your money war money more money right
they dont even really undastand wot its like electro livin in the land of the lite
electro livin
electro livin in the land of the lite
electro livin
electro livin in the land of the lite

were electro livin in the land of the lite
everythin is switched on still sumthin dont work rite
do wot eva u gotta do to make it through the night but wot eva u do dont beleive the hype

Verse

lets have a little natter about a couple of matters
poure me a cuple of cha a little butter an crackers
the kids are unruly news dus not fool me
and if tv dont play me no more then youtube me

so take your best shot with ya best shooter were right here now entertain us computer

Chorus

young money love money blood money right
your money war money more money right
they dont even really undastand wot its like electro livin in the land of the lite
electro livin
electro livin in the land of the lite
electro livin
electro livin in the land of the lite

were electro livin in the land of the lite
everythin is switched on still sumthin dont work rite
do wot eva u gotta do to make it through the night but wot eva u do dont beleive the hype

Verse

they cant change wot it is just by puttin a name on
or make sumthing art just by shuvin a frame on
or become less guilty by passing the blame on
or ramp with akala wheres ya brain gone
im the rapper thats dapper
no matter the chatter
the illest whipper snapper
to come from the land of sausege and batter
where fat are getting fatter
and the man dem mad as a hatter
the goffer or the gaffer
well bruv im the latter

Chorus

young money love money blood money right
your money war money more money right
they dont even really undastand wot its like electro livin in the land of the lite
electro livin
electro livin in the land of the lite
electro livin
electro livin in the land of the lite

were electro livin in the land of the lite
everythin is switched on still sumthin dont work rite
do wot eva u gotta do to make it through the night but wot eva u do dont beleive the hype

Verse

things are wot they seem
destpite wot they tell u
beware of the truth or ill send u to bellevue
if u take a closer luk and uncover the veil
you will see there just salesmen with nothing to sell you
but these wags with there fags
and christian dior bags
shag and they brag and pose for lads mags
it is sad
we are sad for things we cannot have
but we are not sad for bagdad

Chorus x2

young money love money blood money right
your money war money more money right
they dont even really undastand wot its like electro livin in the land of the lite

Most of the rap in the U.K especially around birmingham is about rasicm and social discrimination so i would check around for bands/artist from there, particually the free style rap battles one particular gentle men rapped,
"They see a black man coming, people in wheelchairs get up and start running!"
this made me exclaim "oh, snap" several times

A band i would suggest for rap(-esce) music is Faithless some of their lyrics are very deep and scary.

Take a look at Fort Minor. Also I believe Lupe Fiasco was mentioned above. Also Wyclef Jean (older stuff).

I like good rap and I have to agree with you about the "my dick is bigger then your dick" stuff.
I think System of a Down had a song about that.

Don't assume that all the rap out there is gangster rap. In fact there's a large amount of rap that's about the betterment of ones self or the African-American community as a whole. Just look at the rest of the examples on this tread or look up soon come by Asheru or truly unique by the same artist.

I hate Flobots with a passion, but if it's intelligent hip hop you're looking for I'd recommend:

Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip
Angles almost moved me to tears the first time I heard it, a true musical genius.

Sage Francis
In one word, backpacktastic. Intelligent lyrics from a bald, bearded, white, straight edge vegan.

Public Enemy
Political, powerful rap, if only more modern artists would take inspiration from them. Flava Flav is a grade A twat though.

De La Soul
They like dasies! Hippy hop!

Immortal Technique
He can be very violent, but he's also very politicaly concious

I love most forms of hip hop though, I'm more interest in the sound of the lyrics, the worldplay and how they fit the beats than having lyrics I can relate to.

Yeah, but in between lyrics like die, die, blood, die, satan and a cock contest, I'll go with what is the funniest.
True, I will definitely take funny over all that. I would take thought provoking over funny though. That's why I like System of a Down they can do both sometimes.

I will also add Rage Against the Machine to that list of good rap. I assume you've already heard of them but I'm just making sure.

Immortal Technique is pretty good inspirational rap, though some of it can get pretty dark. Check out his song "Dance With The Devil" and you'll see what I mean.
