As I'm sitting here passing a kidney stone, I've been watching a crapload of movies. I enjoy a wide variety of genres, but I especially like Sci-Fi. I was watching Pandorum and thinking, this is an instant Sci-Fi/horror classic. Our kids will still be seeking out and watching this movie( assuming the culture of media is generally contiguous). It got me to thinking. What other movies can be classified as such? A number come to mind, but I'll let the public opinion speak on this one.

Pandorum was an awesome movie, I thought Quarantine was done really well (not the resident evil one)

Sunshine and Event Horizon are great if you're looking for something a little different.

Obligatory insertion of Original Star Wars Trilogy.

Robocop stands very well.

And no list is complete without Bladerunner.

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.
And moon

For different reasons. Spotless is the only romance/sci-fi movie thats worth anybodies time (i cant stress how under-appreciated this title is).

Wheras Moon really caught the isolationism theme perfectly, i dont doubt it will be too slow pace for a lot of people but the acting was amazing, it was a great film to me.
I agree, Moon was amazing. I really felt for the characters, very moving.
I've never actually seen Spotless, but you seem to have good taste so I'll check it out.

Moon. Just... Moon. I usually like my movies with action or horror or some sort of cheap entertainment but Moon is just a moving film. It does so much with so little. It's fantastic and an instant classic.

The Fifth Element was the first thing to spring to mind, for me. Dated and almost an actual classic now... but it was definitely an instant classic when it came out.

I am prob going to get flamed for this, but I actually did not fins blade runner as amazing as everyone says it is. I WILL agree that it was revolutionary scifi for the time period, but I feel it falls a little short of other scifi films.

Therefore I humbly put forth Aliens. The ultimate scifi/horror masterpiece.
Honorable mentions to Donnie Darko, the Matrix, and the last half of The Prestige.

Star Wars. What, no one else was thinking it? This film practically invented small ship combat, or at least perfected it. Without it, we wouldn't have darth vader, or tie fighters, or X-wings. Not to mention the references and inspirations.
