I can't really argue against his points really. Spiderman is basically a game of short chores on a checklist to do but the core gameplay is so enjoyable that the game really does stay fun. I guess it's sorta both a pro and a con as the "chores" keep the fun from ending while still being complete been-there-done-that game design. The super generic open world design is why I really can't give Spiderman more than a 7/10 but I'm still playing it because Spidey's chores are fun and I want my allowance :)

This is a stretch. Might as well say any linear game is the same as Zelda (picked at random) because it could be interpreted as following a destiny or something because there's only one path to advance and fulfill.

One could also say every game where you play as a protagonist is a ?role playing game?, because you are in their shoes, playing their role.

Anyways, why hasn?t anything really come close to the pure joy of playing that THPS had so many times? The levels were so well designed and inventive. There was a brilliant mix of reality and fantasy. Levels had interesting themes, and were varied enough that you could always practice any number of gameplay facets. I think THPS4 was about the height of it, although admittedly I didn?t play much of any latter entry.

Spider-Man would be a complete slog of a game if it wasn't for the fact that the movement is so GODDAMN FANTASTIC that it makes the side quests fun to do instead of just a chore.

In any other game I would completely give the middle finger to the kind of content that this game presents. The vast majority of the side quests are just finding collectables and doing fetch quests. The research quests are boring (and kind of preachy) and the backpacks, landmarks, com towers, and black cat stakeouts can barely count as content, yet somehow I can spend hours swinging around the city getting them and not feeling bored.

I love just zigzagging around the map picking up all this shit. I don't even really care about the costumes and upgrades I'm getting out of doing them all.

This game literally only works because Spider-Man's movement system is the best.

Can you grab collectibles with your webs? Like instead of having to walk up to them and holding a button to ?pick them up?, can you just see them from a distance and pull them to you instead?

That would be cool. In a game like this it would seem the more objects your webs can interact with the better.

Yes and no (mostly no).

There is one collectable which is chasing down pigeons. There are 12 specific pigeons, you swing through the city, find them, then have to chase them down and catch them with your webs. That collectable is pretty fun because it actually involves a bit of a challenge. The rest of the collectables I've found so far are much less involved and are literally just go to location and get thing (or take picture of thing).

I guess it's conceivable that you could swing by one of the backpacks and grab them, but from my experience they have a very small interaction zone making that nearly impossible.

Yep. That was the point of Danny's review. From an overall design standpoint, the game is rather bottom of the barrel with regards to the open world content.

This is kinda putting me off Spiderman 4. Trying to find out if Tony Hawk 4 is BC for XB1. Edit. Nope.

May have to get a 360 from Gamestop to play it.
