Electrocuting people like flies with your lightning gun would be cool, but would it be practical?

I think not. Wait until personal defense companies begin producing suits of rubber armor and suddenly all 1st world nations adopt it into their military's arsenal, thus creating jobs and cash flow.

Practical for business. Not as a weapon. Besides, if all it takes is having somebody to wear a thin sheet of rubber to not die, then it's become useless, where as a bullet can kill you regardless or not if you have that rubber suit.

Well, if it also shot shurikens...

...and had tits and was on fire...

...it wouldn't matter if it was practical or not.

I believe you need to lower your Yahtzee-Quoting percentage.

No, impractical. Any metallic object would instantly attract the electrons in the lightning-strike, meaning that in order for it to be effective you'd need to be in an empty room against an enemy covered in teaspoons.

If it was just lightning, no. The bolt would only hit the nearest grounded object, which is probably not what you were aiming at. Something that might be possible is a gun that shoots a charged projectile(like, say, shurikens), like getting shot and having a massive static shock at the same time. Although, I don't really see the point. plain bullets would be much easier and just as effective.

I think the better question is 'Does it matter if it's practical?'. It would be awesome, end of story.

Sorry to post off topic here, but if he had quoted any other comedy show in context would you have called him out on it?

OT: I'm no expert here, but where does the supply of electricity coming from?

Curses, you beat me to it. Although, you forgot that the nearest grounded object is likely to be YOU. Electricity has very little care for direction.

no, because you can't aim lightening. and it may just hit the guy next to you and make him explode. which would be cool, but suck cause more than likely he's on your team. Maybe as a Red Alert Telsa Coil, but as a gun no.

I was assuming that if you took the trouble to make a gun that shoots lightning, you'd take the proper precautions. Such as a silicone suit, or maybe some cage-effect chainmail (I heard about a guy who made a suit, they call him Dr. Megavolt)

You could mount a bolt and metalic thread launcher on an aircraft or blimp to redirect lighning at a specific target, but it would be far from practicle or safe.
