Would you think a lightsaber is a practical weapon? I think if I was in the Star Wars universe, I would personally use a rocket launcher or some other kind of heavy weapon since in a combat situation, I would probably have the range advantage.

At first no. I hit myself with a real sword enough times to know when to put it down. With a Lightsaber on the other hand..

That depends really. Do I also have the force? If not, then possibly. If yes, then hell yes.

I don`t think it is practical.

However, my lightsaber harpoon is.

A lightsaber in real life would not have a stopping point.

It would just continue on in whichever direction it's pointed at.

Therefore, it would be completely useless, unless you had to take out an entire army.

no

nothing is practical when you have a deathstar on your side...

...well at least one that doesn't have that darn achilles heel exhaust port thing...

Only if you have the spacial orientation and the discipline of a Jedi Knight. Otherwise, you would end up cutting up everything around you, including yourself.

Who cares if it's practical? It's jaw droppingly cool!

On topic thought, probably not. Unless like awsome117 said and you have force powers as well.

If I had the Force and lots and lots and lots and lots of training, then maybe. If not? Then I value my limbs too much to even try.

Is it practical? I dunno, I listen to HK-47's and Atton Rand's advice for when it comes to killing Jedi. That said. Who wouldn't want one?

In the hands of someone who can use it well, it's awesome. Also if they have the force. Seriously, facing a jedi, you can't shoot them with a rocket launcher (they force push it back), you can't snipe them (they dodge), and you can't shoot them with conventional guns (they deflect).

I don't think it would be practical, too many bad physics involved. For example say you try to cut through something, the molten parts are gonna fly all over, most likely landing on your hand which is holding the saber. Also it is questionable as to the actual physical forces on the blade. Say you try to cut through a moving vehicle, is there and equal and opposite force of blade vs car? If so you probably would break your arm.

Shame that only applies to only a few jedi, your average jedi is as squishy as you or me. You snipe them they die, plenty of regular jedi have been gunned down. A rocket, your average jedi can probably move the course abit, not a direct hit, but enough to cause some collateral damage. And since when did they fight conventional guns, the starwars universe is lasers, I'd put money that a Jedi, even a really powerful one wouldn't be able to stop any semi/automatic gun. Too many small parts moving at a ridiculous velocity.

Actually they only work against laser blasts, a regular bullet would probably melt through the laser but thanks to the velocity, the wielder would get a face full of molten lead. So until all of the weapons are replaced by laser blasters, the lightsaber would do more harm than good even with a trained wielder.

Pretty much my sentiments.

its not as practical as a real sword. with a real sword, you get a feel for where the blade is and where it's headed because you feel feel the momentum. but light has an extremely small amount of momentum. by this logic it would be easy to lose track of your blade and could easily chop off your own arm or leg.
