I've been wondering if Cities XL was a good alternative to Sim City 4. I've been playing Sim City 4 for awhile and have yet to get bored of it, however I am also hearing a few things on Cities XL, making me feel as though I might get the same experience from that game as well, just with better graphics. Before I do buy the game however, I would like to know two things. One, does it have the same type of game play style as Sim City 4 or something similar(Zoning, management of infrastructure, etc.) because I have heard that it might, and two, does the single player cost a monthly fee ?

Two words: FUCK. NO.

Cities XL is a mess of a game, ill-conceived, ill-executed, and nowhere near being a worthy companion to SimCity 4. Sadly, the genre has been dead on the vine since Rush Hour came out, as EA seems more interested in simplistic games like SimCity Societies and Monte Cristo is...well, Monte Cristo. Games full of promise that turn out to be junk.

I'd stay far, FAR away from that game if I were you, and I've played every city-builder to come down the pike since SimCity Classic.

Actually.. I wouldnt mind seeing a new sim city game come out.. that improves on the franchise.

I wasnt a fan of 4 either because even though it did expand in a lot of areas it seriously isnt fun to me because the lack of viability to make functional (as in without excessive debt) cities that go outside of the sim city design formula.

Well that's unfortunate, so far I have been preoccupying my time with Settlers, Rise of an Empire, which does bring me back to the stronghold days, but I still wish that a good sim city clone was out there, then again, I guess I could always wait for when Sim City 5 is announced,
right ?
right...

I've bought and played it, it's not nearly as good, and I could not recommend it. (DARN YOU STEAM FOR BEING SO DARN CONVENIENT)

Sim City 4 is the best, that's it, the high point, end of the genre.

Unless something other than Cities XL revisits it in the future.

that was SC5. no really. that is the SEQUEL to SC4.
Um... What? I think you meant to post to the OP, but yes. I know SC:S was the sequel, and it was worse than any other SimCity game, but still I rather enjoyed it.

people called it a spin off, but no its technically SC5. so your waiting for things that already happened. you would be waiting for SC6 but it did so poorly they recalled games and gave back people's money.
Why do you keep posting to me? I know this already. I even pointed that out in my last post.

simcity societies. it did so badly they wont return to it.
I'm not sure about anyone else, but if Maxis returns to it, with out the intervention of Tilted Mill Entertainment (Sim City Society developer) I would forgive that mistake (sorry Rooftop assassin, but for me, that game made me weep for the series) in turn for an actual, well made, sequel, though I am afraid that this might never happen.

ARRRUUUGH!!! BURN IT WITH FIRE!!

Seriously, it's a huge, welted anus of a game, don't even bother.

If I were you, I'd just reinstall Sim City 4 (which incidentally I just did)

Cities XL is basicly the pure basic essence that was what people saw in Sim City. Only problem, it does not really reach any level of the charm, depth or longlevity and you have to pay much more money than the original purchase price if you are going to unlock all the other buildings online (the system is a bit confusing to me as I have not really given it much look online so correct me if I'm wrong on a detail here)

So all in all I'd rather recomment you to go check the SNES Sim City instead. At least there you got the chuckle factor of Bowser
