Is DLC overpriced?

Hmmm. Depends.

Dragon Age I was all prepared to be annoyed at until I realise that one of the two DLCs was free (because it was content they'd intended to be in the original game but had to cut because of time) and that the extra content kind of enhances the whole game. Well... mostly the chest.

Shale is supposed to be a great character though I haven't gone and got him myself.

The actual level itself was fairly well done if somewhat short so I'm in two minds about that.

Even if I say it's a fiver for a two hour level that's still twice better VFM than a lot of games provide.

I don't think I like this "Microtransaction" stuff so much. I'd rather pay a tenner for a whole extra campaign or something along those lines I think.

I believe yes that it is over priced , its all added expence on top of paying for xbox live. yes there are more adult gamers that can afford it however for those who are still a student like myself find it more difficult to accomodate the funds for these.

On Monday i bought modern walfare 2 and Dragonball raging blast , it came to £85 , im sorry but the prices of games are becomming more bizaree on top paying for your downloadable content.

Some DLC is horribly overpriced, mostly the addon customes for certain games (like Ninja Gaiden 2), other stuff, like the Fallout 3 DLC, not so much.

Some DLC is worth the price tag (Shivering Isles is probably the best example of value). Some is utter crap (like Knothole Island or See the Future for Fable 2).

DLC is ok, very overpriced i think map packs for online should be worth alot less. DLC is a good idea but games like GTA which release completely new games have the idea of what it should be like rather than a couple of maps.
I do agree with your point concerning map packs. They are way too overpriced when it is usually very uncertain whether or not the maps in question will be good, terrible, or more of the same (it's usually the latter two by the way).

My big problem with the Fallout DLC is that they were all released bundled with the game for $60 later. This sounds great except that you relieze that either Fallout 3 is now $10 since all of the DLC's cost that (and the online marketplace is really reluctant to change that) or buying a DLC on a DISC is less expensive. Isn't the concept of downloadable content supposed to be that you shou be buying it online since buying it on a disc is more expensive? (Please don't go into the whole "It decreased in price" or "it was a bundle pack" because online it's still the same and there is no option online to download them all for a cheaper price).
As for DLC costs being too much. I'll agree. We're being charged $10 for a 2hour expansion most of the time (also extra stuff like costumes and weapons are insane in their price). Personally, I prefer the direction Ubisoft is going with the DLC (they have special achievements in their game that's total adds only to purchasing extra stuff for the game).
Exactly! I have this very problem at the moment, considering whether or not I should get some/all of the dlc packs for Fallout 3. Buying a new game (GOTY edition) is cheaper (still expensive) than buying the packs, and online you have to pay quite a lot for each. I could just buy the 2 or 3 I fancy the most, but I don't see why this should be a problem?

If I buy the GOTY edition, could I then give/sell my old copy of the main game, or is it forever tied to my GFWL account? Gotta love the uncertainty and scams the industry provides, console players can always re-sell their games, we can't.

I didn't buy any dlc for Oblivion, and I think they would get more buyers, better reputation, and maybe even equal or higher profit, if the deals were better.

Course not! I think the Peggle DLC comes out today, for less than the original game, you get more levels than were in original Peggle. Not to mention either of the Mass Effect DLC's.

Depends, if Super Street Figher 4 was a DLC, then the price would be justified given the length of time it took to make and to be released.

Dragon's Age DLC was released on the same day??! How do we know that they didn't just take it out of the original game?

DLC costs... well, vary. I'm generally fine with the prices on DLC, but that is due to my only purchasing it when I feel the expected amount of gameplay makes sense for the price. Similarly, I feel sorry for the poor saps who actually bought the "content packs" for The Sims 2, which seemed a complete ripoff. 10 bucks for a few models and textures? ...yeah, right.

In the particular case of Dragon Age and Warden's Keep, I don't mind so much. It's essentially a way to obtain the Collector's Edition content even if you didn't manage to get your hands on a CE package.

DLC is priced and thats the end of it. For you Diablo players how much did you pay for LOD back in the day and think about how much it really added. If you compare DLC to that then DLC is cheaper AND bigger than that. just my 2 cents

Really depends on what the DLC is. If it's simply to unlock content already ON the disc, then anything more than $5 is really pushing it; for additional content NOT on the disc, it's a matter of (a) how much more gameplay will I get out of it and (b) how does it compare to similarly-priced offerings?

Some is and some isn't. Horse armor or Magna Carta 2's definitely is. Re5 's is. DA:O isn't (regardless if they took it out or not) FEAR 2 new campaign isn't. Fallout 3 isn't even though you can now buy it all for the same price as they sold the original. The difference being that it is almost a year later so by all rights you should be able to pick up the original pretty cheap. It is sad when you walk into a store and see the original sitting beside the GOTY edition both selling for the same price.

DLC is the new name for Expansion Packs which PC games have had and have sold at reasonable prices for quite literally decades.

The difference is many console game developers have taken this to the ridiculous extreme, nickle and diming players for every little upgrade when any decent and self-respecting developer back "In the good old days" would either put it in an expansion pack or just have it as a free update.

This "pay only 200 microsoft points for this little song... that is actually already on the disk" now that is bullshit overpriced DLC.

Also, DLC on consoles is generally more expensive than on the PC precisely due to licensing, third party devs have to pay a fee to release ANYTHING on a given console. No fees for PC.

Perhaps I misunderstood but you Don't think the gta dlc was overpriced?

Games are expensive enough to begin with but when they start charging $20 for dlc, they better make it worth it. The gta dlcs would've been worth the cost if they had added an island (even a small, cheesy, Staten Island style one) but $20 for a mission pack and a few more weapons in the same exact setting is pretty ridiculous. And what are you left with if you buy all the dlc? The same gta4, just $100 and with some different missions and things that should've been in the game originally.

To OP: Yes, I understand that (especially on consoles) we can't get dlc for free anymore but most dlc is at least twice the price it should be. Even if I really like a game, I'm not necessarily going to download everything for it: Loved Fallout 3 but thought Pitt and OA were pretty cheesy for $10. Broken Steel was too but it was the only way to fix the crappy ending.
