A lot of people I have spoken to on this subject have had the same thing to say; "Where could gaming possibly go next?"

With gaming reaching visual and audial perfection, and many games becoming more of a chore than a fun pastime (For example, many MMOROG's, which seem more like part time jobs than games, jobs that you have to PAY for) I ask, how many more generations will it be before the attitude to gaming becomes more of a 'been there done that' kind of thing?

I began thinking these thoughts after the new Ratchet & Clank game was announced. I've been an avid fan since the original was released on the PS2. But on news of another 2 new ones for the PS3, I couldn't've cared less. It didn't excite me at all, and not only do I feel I won't buy the game, but I'm considering selling my consoles. I felt the same when the new Animal Crossing was announced for next month.

I need to know how you guys feel, is it just me? Or are games starting to become samey, and boring. I mean, we will never get back the amazing gaming experiences of the SNES, or PSone, will we?

Your thoughts, please :)

Well..unless they start making games more challenging then the system isn't going anywhere, no a days it seems that games are hyped up so much..when you get it you don't have anything to
be exited about...but i mean the next gen era only just started...and it is like the 3rd generation of gaming.... and there aren't any MMO's that can stand up against WOW...

Think about
Next gen just started
SONY is slowly dying
Microsoft is now going toe to toe with nintendo...i think when the console war is over...we will have another generatoin of gaming?

I kind of hope so...but only a little. Why you ask? Because the idiots and jerks are normally the first to go.

3rd generation? That would mean gaming started at the PS1? In my view, that's when gaming hit its prime. In gameplay, anyway...

And if anything, I see it as Sony and Microsoft going toe to toe, and after the PS3's poor start, Sony have now shot past Microsoft in the ratings, and quality games. In Nintendo's words; "Let them have their console war". They are their own style of gaming.

Dear god.

How can you stand surrounded by the releases we are getting this year, this damn month, and say gaming is fading.

Really, think before you post. Gaming is doing better than ever. You might as well say 'Well, TV has done every possible trope and cliche, guess it's fading'. TV, if you have noticed, is not fading. Neither is gaming.

Where can movies possibly go next?

Not all games are samey and boring. And I'm not only referring to the games such as Portal and such. I'm referring to the indie games community. There's so many indie games out there with crazy experimental gameplay ideas that they'd be impossible to count! Games that stray from the norm, and go out on their own to live in, not a forest or house, but a gigantic mansion made out of leaves that is upside down and whose colors are inverted. There's some strange shit out there...

Have you been to The Independent Gaming Source? Go there. Go to the freeware section. Try some stuff out. Maybe try some of Kloonigames' monthly experimental games. He does weird stuff... Like a little kid who has lost his toilet paper, and has to go around holding his toilet paper and rolling it up as he goes along. And a game where you arrange chains to swing a 16-ton weight into rectangular "monster." And a game where you fish by pouring oil into the ocean...

Just like TV is a fad and the Internet. Both of these items are evolving items, and so is Gaming, it influenced by the buyers and smarter companies listen to their non-loyal and loyal buyers. Look at Fallout 3, They took the feedback from Elder Scroll III and IV and said "This is what made our game enjoyably and more like a job." I never even got pass the first city in ES:III and I only played maybe 10 hours into ES:IV. Fallout III I have already spend 40 hours in the game and still haven't gotten bored.

What we find is that bigger companies tend to put out a bunch of mediocre games to keep us busy till the younger companies put out their masterpieces.

The reason we feel the comapnies are failing to understand their consumers is that they put all of their faith in marketing to decided everything on the project, but the then there are companies that use marking simply to sell their game and they using experience directors to create games with immersion and feeling.

Yeah... the wells of creativity in game designers' minds aren't dry yet. Just look at games like Mirror's Edge or some of the PAX 10. The Wii is winning this generation's console war (by the way, Wikipedia says 7th generation), and it's selling to many people who've never picked up a game system. You may be feeling very apathetic at the moment, but that may just be your loss of interest in the endless sequels that game companies churn out. For this generation at least, the gaming industry is safe.

Edit: Dammit, someone beat me to the Wikipedia reference.

Gaming isn't fading. though my love for it has as I have grown up. Perhaps that is why we remember the ps1 super nes days as so wonderful. We were young and saw everything with rose colored glasses. Then as we get older we see the trivialities of gaming and it loses a certain amount of importance to us as we get busy with college and careers and women and whatever.

No, it's not.

Surprisingly, for once, a relevant Metro article. [http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?Video_games_outselling_music_and_video&in_article_id=387291]

Creativity may be a dying breed, but gaming is thriving.

I wouldn't say gaming is a dying fad, but the quality has certainly gone down. And by gone down I mean dropped below sea level and emerged from the posterior end of this dimension.

But if I had a choice between gaming and tolerating the infuriatingly ignorant society of today's day and age, I'll go with gaming.

Come on, there's no need for that. I was asking for your opinions on how I feel. There's nothing I can do about how I feel about something, and I was just enquiring.

I honestly think gaming's pinnacle was the PS1 era. Around them people played game's to play them, then the X-Box came out and that was when it became a fad. That fanbase was primarily surrounded by non-casual gamers.
That's what I mean about how I feel. Gaming is becoming full of people shouting down the mic at you for being a 'noob'. Well sorry, CoD addict if I don't spend my whole life playing, and just log in for a bit of fun once in a while.

Haha! Metro... Many a bus journey you have lightened for me... But yeah, I was thinking less about statistics of gaming, because statistically, gaming is clearly doing better than ever. But that's because it has been massively popularised. I'm talking peoples attitudes towards it, and the creativity that is plummeting. The commercialisation of it has led to some pretty atrocious games recently.

Yeah :/ Sucks, doesn't it. What I wouldn't give to be 10 again...

Nope. If you get technical, this is the seventh generation of gaming.
Haha, I don't think many people saw the sarcasm in my comment... I knew the generation we are currently in, I just didn't want to call the guy out on his mistake. I hate doing that ;)
