Is it racism?

I'm just wondering if you guys consider this racism? My family has been in Canada since the colonization by the Europeans (on my father's side). Now we have been here for a looooong time and we've been through the bad times and the good times over the past few hundred years. some of our ancestors helped build this country.

So it pisses my dad off when someone who obviously is a new immigrant comes in with pins & stickers & etc. that are basically saying "down with gay marriage", and etc (gay marriage is legal in Canada, and my dad is gay). That is just one example, but what about when other people in my family get upset and sometimes downright mad when we get immigrants who want to bend the laws so they can sort of impose their culture unto the rest of the country.
For example a guy did not want to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle on the highway, because he had a turban. Or the right to allow Kirpans in schools (a Kirpan is a small knife) to accommodate religious groups (keep in mind knives are weapons). Another one is one man refusing to wear the imposed uniform of an RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) officer because he had a turban and didn't want wear the regulatory hat. Is it racist to get mad at these people and complain?

I mean, think about it this way : you invite a person into your house, for let's say dinner. And they decide to rearrange all of your living room and furniture because they think that your house should look more like theirs. Or they start to comment on how you should be raising your kids and that you're doing a bad job. Wouldn't you get insulted and mad at them for that? I mean, they're in your home thanks to you being nice to them, and they turn around and do something insulting...

It's not racism, but they may argue it's a form of bigotry. On the other hand, when they immigrate they agree to abide by the laws of your country, so in my opinion it's fair for your government to say no you can't.

No, that's not racism, that's common sense.

You don't want to wear a motorcycle-helmet? Then don't ride a goddamn moterbike.
You don't want to wear the RCMP uniform, then don't join the goddamn RCMP.

That goes for everyone, turban or no bloody turban.

lol wow, I start a topic on racism and I get this as a question... go figure...

My father was married and was in a Heterosexual relationship with my mom. But eventually he realized that he was gay, and that the relationship wasn't going to work.

Political correctness can only go so far. Eventually we have to put a stop to the idea that rules don't apply to certian people because of race or religion.

Well.. It really depends...

it's not really racism, since it's ensuring safety and not being rude. The "down with gay marriage" is really racist though. Personally, I think your example at the bottom was a little OTT but is similar. In conclusion, it's your life and you must accept consequences (apart the racist bits(black,gay...)).

I really really hope your entire family all dresses like this:

well no were not at all dressing like natives, but we do have native blood too. I mean, it's kind of hard not to have SOME native blood when you're part of a really old Canadian (or American for that matter) family...

Yes! Stick it to 'em!
Are my senses tickling with irony? Sarcasm? Or genuine punchlines?

I agree with mobius they are using there race/creed/religion/and so on to get away with breaking the laws.
for example If I tryed to ride a motorcycle without a helmet I would get in a lot of trouble
but if I put on a turban suddenly Im Immune to that law.

I'm all for multiculturalism, but it's a two way street.

If immigrants expect us to adopt or adapt to their customs, they have to do the same in change.

Actually, it is racism on their part. They are assuming that the laws don't apply to them because of their Race/Creed/Religion/whatever. If I have to follow those laws, assuming they don't is the same as saying that they are beter than you, and should be treated special because they are better than you. Fuck them.
Here Here!! I have quite a bit too say about that stuff but I wont here.

Racism will always exist and everyone does it one way or another. People with same color skin bond together because it gives them a common ground. They hate another group because they all hate that group and gives them a common ground. Its illogical but that is the human species. Its only really a problem when one starts to act on that hate that it needs to be addressed. If someone is passing a bill to get special rights then vote it down. That is democracy.
