Is Neverwinter Nights 2 any good? You can probably guess why I'm asking this now [http://store.steampowered.com/], I've been thinking about buying it all week, and now that there's only 7 hours left on the sale, I kind of need to make up my mind ^^

The thing is, I just completed the first Neverwinter Nights and didn't like it at all. The story was boring, the characters weren't very memorable, and the combat felt... I don't know, not nearly as fun as it did in Baldur's Gate. I've heard people say that the sequel is actually better, but how much better is it? Is it good enough to drop $10 if I didn't like the original?

Also, can anybody recall it ever being cheaper than $10 on a Steam sale? It hasn't been among the daily deals, so if I buy it now there's always the risk that it will end up even cheaper on the winter sale (if there is a winter sale at all this year).

So, does anybody feel like helping me out with this? ^^

I feel that "strongly mediocre" is a good descriptor for the main game. The expansions are alot better.

Bad engine, boring story, imho.

That said I did like nwn1 so maybe my taste differs to much.. and 10 bucks ain't much.

I enjoyed it immensely, what little I got to play of it (lost my discs, but I think someone 'lost' them into their collection, if you follow).

Then again, I'm a D&D nerd, so... yeah.

I really liked it. If your a person who can spend 2 hours on creating your character, this is a good game for you.

For 10$, its an amazing game. If your looking for something long, and will soak up a month of your time ((possibly less if you rush it)), this is a good game for you.

Traditional RPG at.... Its above average? Yeah. Its not the best RPG ever, but its up to standards.

I would extremely recomment Divinity 2 the Dragon Knight Saga in place of Neverwinter Nights 2. While I haven't played enough Neverwinter Knights 2 to give a fair opinion on it my reason for that is because the game crashed within an hour of play and refused to let me go further. However please take a look at Divinity 2 since it seriously is a good RPG.

It was ok. I liked NWN1 better, but mostly for the user-generated multiplayer stuff. For single player, NWN2 is probably better. As Hawgh said, though, the expansions are supposed to be really good (I only played the main campaign).

For prices - steamprices.com has handy graphs for this sort of thing. It says NWN2 Platinum was $6.95 in July for a few days, which is the only time its been below $10.

But if you want a great RPG you want Divine Divinity, the first game in the series. Damn that was a good game (with a questionable name)

OT: I enjoy Neverwinter Nights 2. I'm actually in the process of playing it now. It's enjoyable! I'd say buy it (that said, I got it as a trade for a McDonalds Smurf toy. Yeah.)

Get it if only for Mask of the Betrayer which is like a distant cousin to Planescape. I enjoyed it a lot and it starts slow but gets way better. There are some underlined ideas that Obsidian wanted to knock off some stereotypes in there but, as most of their games, was probably not finished. Still, if you like RPGs, it will be fun.

Oh and this

DKS is very very good.

Edit: NWN original expansion sucked really bad. I only finished it once and that's barely. Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark however, rocked. Much better in almost all aspects. HotU was the better of the two but they tie together.

I would say that NWN2 was quite mediocre. However the expansion mask of the betrayer I enjoyed immensely.

I loved the first but i found the second wasn't that great.

Of course, since you didn't like the first, You might like the second more.

Thought the main game was boring, nothing really grabbed me. The expansions however, are really bloody good. Loved them. IMO it was the same with the first game too.

It's a damn sight better than the first, that's for sure.

Campaign in the first game was so, damn, BORING. Second one isn't stellar, but the combination of improved graphics, gameplay and characters make it much more pleasant to play.

The core gameplay has been polished, but not altered, so if you simply didn't like the way NWN1 handled, you probably aren't going to enjoy NWN2 any more. That aside, it's really good, and I say get it. $10 is a great price for the game.

Like others said, the main game is ok'ish (I still enjoyed it and finished it with several characters), but the expansion was pretty good.

I actually own both since Divine Divinity went on sale on GoG a few days ago so I picked it up immediately (along with Beyond Divinity just because. I know it's not as good but I figured why not.)

I enjoyed it a LOT, and I really liked the characters. The story is kinda hard to follow halfway through the game, you tend to do a lot of piddling about, but the combat is relatively nice and the game has a lot of charm. That being said, it definitely won't be a game for everyone. But I'd say it's probably worth $10 at the very least.
Oh, and the game is nightmarishly long. I liked that, but I don't think that aspect is good for everyone, either.
