*edit* Maybe they haven?t been hacked or DDOS?d. It was on all last night for me so perhaps the following is an overreaction. But just in case...*/edit*

It seems they are the only entertainment company that must be perfectly and constantly obedient and whatnot or else face the wrath [https://www.gamesradar.com/amp/ps4-servers-down/] of *some holier-than-thou hacking group*

Let?s just call it right now: odds are some group will soon claim responsibility and that they?re doing it *for the people* all because Sony didn?t show up at E3 this year. What they don?t ever seem to understand is that millions of paying customers now cannot access the services they paid for, and all they did was piss off an entire userbase and alienate themselves even further from anyone they thought they were seeking ?justice? for.

As one of those customers, I could probably speak for all when I say this shit is getting old. And before anyone says ?Well Sony should just invest in better security already,? the problem there is that anyone can be hacked regardless of how good their security is, which history has shown repeatedly. Anyone determined enough can hack anything with a connection, but for some reason Sony always has the biggest target on their backs.

The million dollar question would simply be, why is that?

It seems more likely to be related to them rolling out new features for the beta version of the PS4 OS today really.

There's also something of a distinction to be made here. Most of these sort of disruptions if they are done by online groups are just DDOSing, there's really no actual hacking involved in any sort of security sense. Some of the folks who provide DDOSing services (yes that is a thing) do what would be considered hacking as they usually build their networks with malware (and on the backs of the idiotic trend of having smart everythings built by companies with no concept of security), but usually not the gibbering LULZBRAH groups you're referencing. They're generally just the end users.

One would think they?d have tested it enough beforehand, or that a beta wouldn?t be rolled out as a mandatory network wide update. Hopefully it hasn?t a thing to do with firmware or bricked consoles will probably be soon to follow.

Anyways, I hope you?re right overall in this case and that it?s a mostly isolated albeit unfortunately self-inflicted incident. In that case though it?s like, ?C?mon Sony...?

I was going more in the vein that the beat software might've mucked up some of the servers. Since anyone (more or less) can be in the Beta (I've had a few invites for them, but I don't because well, Betas tend to break, lol). Then being down some servers cascades extra traffic on other servers and everything snowballs.

Testing is of course ideal, but at some point testing is going to hit a practical limit. The difference between even a 10,000 person test, or hundred thousand person test, and actual millions of users is exponential.

Its not really limited to Sony either. Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube have all KOed themselves just in the last year with unforeseen complications from server updates. Microsoft Windows fairly infamously had last years October update that straight up started deleting peoples files (which was recalled, rolled out, and the more or less mandatory version only started being released around Jan/Feb this year). Just a couple of weeks ago, Gmail went out for 7 or 8 hours.
