I quite enjoyed RO2, but I'm not sure if this game (which seems like a mod for RO2) is worth $15. How does this game stack up against RO2? I'm particularly interested in the asymmetrical warfare they have been advertising as this seems like an interesting twist on the generic red team vs blue team factions of most multiplayer shooters. Did they deliver on this?

Well it looks exactly like a mod on RO2 so I would hold up on that for now because I also can't find any videos that go in depth enough to explain what tactical differences this brings or if they work at all.

Maybe someone else has played enough to know, otherwise sit tight for reviews.

Didn't even realize Rising storm was out.
But even so, let me, give you some advice: if you liked RO2, you'll probably like Rising storm. RS looks like a reskined map pack, so for $15, you'll get more of the same.

Its new it was released May 30th on steam. There's a few positive user reviews on metacritic so I am hopeful it is good. But I was hoping to get some first impressions from some people on the escapist, in case there any game ruining bugs that I should wait to be fixed before purchasing. Also the asymmetrical warfare is the primary selling point for me, other than that as mentioned it is looks like a reskinned map pack for RO2. So I wanted to know if this is well done before purchasing the game.

Aw screw it. All the stuff I'm reading about the game got me excited so I bought it anyway. I can post a first impressions later since I've seen other threads asking about this game.

Head over to the tripwire forums for overwhelmingly positive views. I personally find the new maps great. The only problem for a lot of people is that the japs have too many smgs for realism.

It's pretty great, and well balanced but the Japanese are slightly less direct often requiring a bit more strategy with the special weapons, the Banzai charge is awesome when you can organize a squad or two to do it it's very effective as often the riflemen can't shoot everyone down.

I think it's worth it, there's very few maps now and campaign mode isn't out yet that's about the only downside. What I really liked too is that they merged the two games so you can play whatever map you like when you join up, it doesn't look like a simple mod imo although in a technical point of view that's pretty much what it does, change the game while using the same engine, the inclusion of the US faction probably means a Western front mod or even a game by Tripwire isn't far off, I like that.
