to start off i would like to say iv only played Morrowind and Oblivion in TES series. i loved them both however,

does it seem racist to you how the classes are? as in the imperials are good leaders and have high social skills and rule over the land, or how the redguards(those with dark skin) are gifted in running and fighting but in thier description it says they prefer to be adventurers instead of soldiers because they dont like taking orders. so the white man rules everything and has conquered the other races, and the black man is a skilled warrior and is a naturally gifted runner. was this on purpose as in it reflects our world in a fantasy world?

this just kinda made me think about it, im not saying i think its racist but i feel its worth a discussion. Thoughts?

It's not easy being greeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!

In that same game you can also play a cat-person or a lizard man... oh, sorry, that was sexist. I mean Lizard *person*, my mistake.

It's racist because cats are drug addicts! D:<

In any case, I don't view it as racist. It is more based off of stereotypical views of different people and countries. The Imperials aren't based off of "whites", but rather the Roman Empire. Likewise, the Bretons are the French, the Nords are the Norse, and the Redguards are more "Arabian" than they are "African".

Oh God! That's why the cat people are so springy and agile and the lizard people are such good swimmers! Racial profiling I tell you!

Okay sorry, seriously you are looking way to far into it.

Nope, my friend says Kajhiit are Arabs and Argonians are Jews. It is all how you look at it.

You could probably make a legitimate argument that it has hints of racism. Although the rest of the world would just view you as being overly anal. I couldn't imagine anyone actually finding it offensive.

"Eheh. Why do Kajhiit lick their butts? To get the taste of Kajhiit cooking out of their mouths! Eheh! Hah!" - Some Argonian

Closest thing I saw to stereotyping in that game.

The redguards were supposed to be a warrior culture, weren't they? It makes sense that they aren't leaders too often. Don't forget though, one of the major characters in the game is a redguard.

What about the orks? Think about the orks! Their feelings could very well be hurt by you making this topic.

It's a game and is a lot less racist than most things coming from Japan to be honest. I'd say just accept it and move on.

Yes. Yes it is incredibly racist and it is only based on the colour of their skin, and the hate for all things different that flows through the developer's veins and fuels the diesel powered motors that are their charcoal hearts.
People in the real world are not different at all, and different geographical locations and cultures do not generally produce people with any noticable differences whatsoever, because we are all carbon-copies of each other except for skin colour. Now come join hands around the campfire and sing.

Well in morrowind the beast races were enslaved by the ruling dark elves, that's the closest thing to racism I can really think of.

Elder Scrolls Racist? No shit! Its supposed to be racist. One of the major themes of the last 2 games has been race, especially Morrowind with the Xenophobic Dark Elves. Its not anything shifty or suspicious, its detailed an realistic. People in this world don't get along like a happy family either and in the Elder Scrolls helps build the impression of a living breathing world. Do the descriptions read stereotypically? Yes. After all they are there in connection with a series of bonuses and the description helps guide new players into the game.

You are reading far too much into this.

It's not racist because it's not attempting to portray real world races. More importantly though is that you misunderstand racism.

Racism is the act of assigning negative connotations to and/or discriminating against a person based on ther ethnic background.

As it's been pointed out here, you are mistaking stereotyping for racism. Quite simply, we do not have the time to assess people individually and we make judgements based on our experiences with people we consider to be similar. Noticing traits and cuultural differences is just an observation. For example, Americans tend to be overweight, it's not a judgement, it's an observation based on fact.

Probably not the Imperials were based on Roman's which was a historical fact

but if the description of the red gaurds claimed they were all lazy or stupid (which as far as I am aware it doesn't) then it would be racist

I have to say I did notice the same. There was one line somewhere about Redguard traditionally not making good mages. I checked their stats, and they certainly weren't the brightest of all the races starting out.

Indeed, they have the whole 'Saints of the Sword' thing going on.
History

Redguards (in their own language 'Yokudans', taken simply from the name of their homeland) hail from the western continent of Yokuda, which sank into the sea in ancient times. The cause of Yokuda's sinking is attributed either to natural factors (such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions) or to the sword-magic revenge of a defeated band of Ansei called the Hiradirge. Upon the sinking of their homeland, the Yokudan fleet set sail to the east, eventually landing in Hammerfell.

At the time, Hammerfell was populated largely with Orsimer (Orcs) and savage beasts. The Yokudans, desperate to survive as a people, launched the so-called Warrior Wave, made up of the Ra'gada, a caste whose descendants are now known as Forebears. They attacked the towns and cities of Nede, Mer, and Orsimer, leaving no survivors and building on top of the ruins. After only a few brutal months, the Ra Gada had established a strong presence along the western shores of Hammerfell. From this foothold they continued to launch assault after assault, eventually succeeding in driving off the Orsimer and making way for the High King and the Yokudan royalty, known as Na-Totambu, to safely arrive in Hammerfell. The modern-day Redguards take name after these Ra Gada and solidified their place in history as magnificent warriors in defeating the strong and hardy Orcs .

[edit] Society

Currently Redguard society is divided into two main socio-political classes known as the Crowns and the Forebears. The Crowns are descended from the High King and the Na-Totambu who ruled in Yokuda. The Crown hold Yokudan tradition in high reverence and greatly dislike the Empire's control over Hammerfell. The Forebears are descended from the Ra Gada warrior class which conquered the province. The Forebears are more cosmopolitan than their Crown counterparts and are more welcoming to the Empire and its cultural traditions.

Redguard society is extremely martial, and nearly everyone is expected to have a grasp of basic weaponry and combat, although only the rulers are generally expected to have any knowledge of strategy, formations and tactics. Only the strongest, fastest and smartest Redguards are accepted into the demanding military, and they are expected to prove themselves worthy or face death. The practice of eastern magic, or Nudri-hi, is greatly frowned upon by Crown and Forebear alike.

Redguards are a highly disciplined and enterprising people, having centuries of experience with warfare in their homeland. Their warriors are acknowledged to be among the best warriors in the world. The Redguards are likewise known for their naval prowess, and their fleets have proved a match for the Empire's best armadas, as seen at Stros M'kai.

[edit] Anthropology

As a race, the Redguards are of approximately average human intelligence, and are generally mentally inferior to Elves. They are of average human height, above average human strength and agility, and show a remarkable capacity for surviving in hot, dry climates. They generally possess dark skin, ranging from light brown in hue, to nearly black, and often with a significant red tint. This depends on the degree of Nedic blood they possess, as most Forebears have at least some, having lived along side Nedic settlers for centuries. They possess very curly hair and rarely more than a wispy mustache and beard, and degree of body hair varies.
