Is the internet going to kill single-player campaigns?

Just beat MW2 on Hardened in a little over a day, and it got me thinking. Remember the days of N64? Multiplayer meant getting a friend to come over for some split-screen. Many games took a long time to beat, but that made sense as single-player was the selling point.

Do you think that every PS3 & xBox being plugged into an ethernet line means the campaign of MW2 is about as much playtime as we can hope for nowadays?

*Disclaimer: I still think MW2 is badass.

I think you hit it spot on with "that made sense as single-player was the selling point". We're in a gaming industry which means that whatever sells the most will get produced the most. So when companies notice how popular multi-player games are, then that's what gets produced.

No.....

Internet and video games have been together(In the PC at least) since 1993. I guess the interwebz is just really really slow at killing something.

This Yahtzee quote has been used WAAAAY too many times.

OT, I think there are going to be less games that have both a significant multiplayer and a significant single player - while there will be a lot of games that specify in one or the other, its unlikely that we will commonly see a game well balanced between multiplayer and single player. (another trend I've noticed is that if a game is to focus on single player, then its more likely to have no multiplayer at all (e.g., ACII, Heavy Rain), but multiplayer-focused games are more likely to have single player tacked on (e.g. Section 8)

Doubtful, no player (I think) could stand multiplayer all day no matter what game they are playing. But campaigns have been getting stupidly short as games get newer. Perhaps they want to keep things short and sweet but a bit more play would be nice :<

No. There aren't many games that use multiplayer as their selling point except MW2, Halo, Gears of War etc: And all of those games have decent/good singleplayer modes. Then they're games like Batman AA and Assassins Creed 2 that are heavily based on singleplayer and no mutiplayer what so ever.

Short answer: Multiplayer will NEVER have a negative effect on singleplayer modes. [/rant}

No, though it will make some games focused on the multiplayer part. But theres still shitloads of single-player games released, eitehr al SP only or with MP as a small attachment.

Dragon Age would like a word. There are plenty of games that have no multiplayer. Some games are single player (dragon age) Others are multiplayer to the point where the single player is just multiplayer with bots (UT titles). Most fall some where in between (MW2).

It depends on what the designer is trying to do, so no. Single player is here to stay.

Nope, Epic Single player games are always the realm of RPGS, Dragon Age, Fallout, TES, etc.

Multiplayer in most games to me always felt tacked on until recently when it became the big thing.

It's doubtful that single player games will be gone.

I am of the opinon that the multiplayer aspect of a game is merely a bonus. I have never bought a game because of the multiplayer.

Hence, I have not, and probably will not, buy MW2. I have come to understand that it is a criminally short single player campaign, and is interchangable, if not inferior, to CoD4's single player.

I did however, run out and buy Dragon Age: Origins as soon as it hit the shelves.

The most hilarious part of that is that in Extra Punctuation, Yahtzee said that it's not funny to quote other people.

OT: No more single player campaigns? Mass Effect, Fallout 3, and the soon-to-come Episode 3 of Halflife2 beg to differ.

And Infinity Ward says that their campaigns are shorter because most ways of expanding the campaign would compromise the storyline.
I agree with you on everypoint you make. You are a good man and i tip my hat to you.

No. Online has had no effect on single player. However I do believe that local multiplayer is suffering because of that.

So would Mass Effect 2 (when released).

Okay, maybe the OP isn't really looking for these kind of games, or maybe he's thinking that the average game length of games now is that of Modern Warfare 2 (some are).

There are quite a few lengthy games that are single player...Lost Odyssey, Bioshock and the up-coming Thief 4.
