Recently a new book came out titled: Physics of the Future. It is by one of my idols Dr. Michio Kaku. Over the weekend I wanted to go get this book, I ended up searching 11 book stores, ranging from target and walmart, to local family owned book stores. Finally I found it at a Barnes and Nobels about an hour away. Though none of the first ten places had this incredible book written by a world renowned phsyicist, all of them had one thing; It's A Shore Thing, by Snooki.... Are people so retarded they would rather read a book by a retard who has a TV show and is more orange than an oompa loompa, as compared to a book by a genius who has apeared on multiple tv shows and documentaries? Is the world really that stupid? Or is it JUST my country?

Whole world I'm afraid, in the UK at least we had a book written by advertisement spokesman (a Meerkat used to advertise Car insurance) outselling basically every other book at the time. If you happened to be a young first time author who'd spent years writing a novel then well... yeah.

This guy has the right idea. Thing is, books these days aren't simply made to inform. They are made to make shitloads of cash. Now ask yourself, which would make more money, a book about advanced physics or a book written by someone famous?

In general, people have been getting smarter throughout the years. It just doesn't show because of the crap that people are trying to sell us. That Snooki book is a prime example.

1. I live in the US
2. Not the fact that it is sold in more places, the fact that more people buy this book. Also this book is an extrodinarily entertaining book for the topic.

It's still stupidity, whether marketing or money moaking is involved. That we live in an era of fake celebrities and undeserved fame and people eat the shit up like it matters is stupidity.

But it is good to know that Dr. Michio Kaku has a book out, hopefully I can find a copy of it somewhere. I have enjoyed seing him on various programs, see a lot of him on the Science Channel.

Well, the other day I couldn't find a copy of Black's Law Dictionary at my local bookstore, but I found 10 self-help books on display, 27 Christian novels, and god knows how many books explaining why Obama is worse than Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Gadaffi, Idi Amin, Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, Castro, Kim Jong Il, Mussolini, AND Lex Luthor combined. So what do you think?

No it isn't.
Sturgeon's law has never applied to people.
This is just basic supply and demand economics. A profitable number of people wanted to pick up Snookie's book, at full price even. Why pass that money up?
Even then, most people are buying it to see how bad it is, mostly to laugh at her.
Depending on your perspective, that's either better or worse than people buying it UN-ironically.
Even then, the fact that fewer people are interested in Kaku's work is the direct result of our long out of date educational system and our government's lack of support when it comes to enriching the cultural lives of the public.
What people tend to do is mix up the chicken with the egg, assuming that the media itself is responsible for the tastes audience that watches it. Despite what doomsayers and culture critics seem to think, society is not declining and their interpretation of Brave New World in inherently flawed. Societal decline doesn't look like the Jersey Shore, or the Real World.
It looks like Darfur or Nuevo Laredo.

That's capitalism for you. More people will buy Snooki's book than Michael Kaku's even though his is a much more gratifying book to read.

Why does not having an interest in physics make people stupid?

Physics puts me to sleep.

I guess some people enjoy reading books about pop culture figures instead of physics-related reading. I believe we should be encouraging reading, no matter the subject matter. Hell, as long as these people enjoy what they are reading, that is perfectly fine. It's unfortunate that you had to drive so far.

I suppose the problem is that idiots are far more numerous so it's more profitable to market to them and praise them.
When society can shame them into going to education centers or state funded euthenasia clinics I will be happier.

Those are actually one in the same, really.

OT: Yes, people are stupid. However, I would've hit Barnes and Noble FIRST, myself, as it is a pretty reliable chain of stores.

Even still, yes the dumb people... As the Grape up here mentions, there's alot of marketing involved. And while marketing people - the kind of people that would allow for the low-level drivvle you mentioned in the first place - are no prize themselves, there is a certain truth about monkeys recognizing a good thing. A dumb thing sent to Wal-Mart will attract the attention of dumb Wal-Mart people. You throw feces in the right direction and eventually you score a hit. That's how it is.

Given that you had to spend hours scouring stores to find some book, when you have the resources to easily find it in just a few minutes, I'd say that you're providing strong evidence that the world is really that stupid.
