If you don't mind simple, and by online you mean one you can download online but not play online, I recommend Galcon [http://www.galcon.com]. It is RTS down almost to the bare bones, and still a fantastic challenge and great fun. I honestly can not stop playing it. I use it as a sort of wake-up tool, it gets my brain moving in the morning, as each game takes a max of about 5 minutes. Though I've had some of the maniac games go longer, but only because the computer and I were busy trading back and forth the same couple of planets. Play it and you'll see what I mean.

I understand that this is not really like Civilization, but I can't stop recommending it to people and for free, I can't not recommend it.

Oh crap! It's late and, as seen below, I didn't even think about the fact that Civ was Turn Based. (never mind that I played the third extensively). I just saw someone write RTS and immediately threw my Galcon-promotion lever. Uhhh... I'll still recommend it.

Perhaps I could also recommend this [http://jayisgames.com/archives/2008/12/cortex_command.php]? It's only a demo, but I think eventually money would be worth spending on it.

Heroes of Might & Magic III is really cheap now. Well, they're all really cheap. III is better than IV. It's kinda like Red Alert, except with dragons and unicorns instead ;x

Nope. You might try Savage 2, but it's not a pure RTS game.
Civilisation is TBS, not RTS.
Oh. Didn't know that, actually, as I have never played it.

Yes, if you want TBS, play Heroes. Dirt cheap piece of wonder. As Yahtzee would say, it's a diamond farting wonder. Because except for CPU sometimes cheating and having better army than you, and that a group of 5 super hard monsters can turn into a group of 30 super hard monsters if you don't hurry up, HoMM III is AWESOME.

IV is bad.

It is indeed bad. Have you tried V? I've been enjoying it so far, because they've added more elf-type classes. Like the old Haven is now...something else, and it's got ranged elves (oh god, I love my ranged units), things that can cast magic, unicorns, dragons and instead of centaurs or ugly goblins, sprites and pixies! And some things with awesomely long swords, so they do splash damage. I'm loving all the updated creatures, although I don't like the new campaigns and you can't seem to create your own maps anymore.

I personally Own 3 copies of Red Alert 2 now. one with a EA strat pack, one with the decade collection, and one I got free for preordering RA3 from gamestop. That sucker will probably be dirt cheap on a place like Ebay. I'm also willing to bet you might be able to find C&C 95 and RA1 on a abandonware site. Maybe Warcraft 1 if you look hard enough.

If you don't mind smaller-scale turn-based tactics (rather than strategy) in a fantasy setting, Battle for Wesnoth [http://www.wesnoth.org/] is worth a look. It's open source, really polished, been in development for ages. It's got that "just one more turn" thing down quite well - probably because its core community of players are also its playtesters, constantly tweaking the game for balance and refinement. The art style is simple, as you'd expect from an open-source game, but it's cute.

My suggestion for anyone who can run Civ IV would be Fall From Heaven II [http://kael.civfanatics.net/]. It's an absolutely epic fantasy mod for Civ IV. Check out Tom Chick's journal of playing the game [http://fidgit.com/archives/2008/12/fall-from-heaven-ii-madness-i.php] if you like a bit of experience-focused long-form game reviewing.

Are you at all interested in browser-based strategy games? Perhaps try Utopia at http://utopia.swirve.com/index.php

The lack of anything much resembling graphics throws folks off but this game was like a tamagotchi (even though I hated them...) in that it's low-tech but occupying your every waking thought. Strategy and community in spades.

It's system requirements are your browser's, so no performance issues there. :D

I would recommend HMM3 cheap, fun to play solo, or you can just get some friends over and do a little hotseat and have a great time.

HMM V is awesome!! Every town got great updates... So the Inferno still have only one shooter, but screw that! Its a succubus and shoots chain fire!... yathzee once said "it could only be more awesome if it had tits and it was on fire" well... looks that way.
The haven still have that knightly appeal that made me love them so much, the sylvan and the Dungeon are better than ever! Seriousely, I think that V is a great add to the Heroes series, unlike the sad IV.
