So as the title says does anybody know if there is a way to turn off the Steam trading card drops? They are starting to get annoying now that so many games are incorporating them and I don't particularly like them blocking up my inventory (call it OCD or whatever, but I like to have as many items in my inventory as I have desktop icons, which is zero). I used to sell them on the market, but its been flooded by billions of cards now, which has made virtually all of them worthless, so I don't even bother with that anymore. If there is a way to disable it (or not) I thought the people of the Escapist would be the best people to ask to confirm one way or the other.

EDIT: If there is no way to disable and anybody wants to take the 19 trading cards that are currently sitting in my inventory off my hands then just let me know.

I would happily take some off of you if you want! There is no use to the cards I think, you can use them for cosmetic stuff in the chat on steam, but no free games or anything for them.

Well the intended purpose of it seems to be to get cards, then craft badges, to gain emoticons/profile backgrounds/possibly coupons (when there isn't a sale going on). Oh getting badges also raises your Steam level, which the only benefit from my understanding is having a higher chance of getting booster packs once you are out of card drops. Also it boosts your ego I guess?

The way I've been using them is mainly just selling most of them. You can make a small amount of cash from it. :3
I've managed to buy the Alan Wake franchise pack, Dungeons of Dredmor, and Mcpixel from the cash made selling cards from games I already owned.

I'm keeping the cards for now. I mean, they aren't worth squat at the moment, since everyone and their mother is getting them from steam sales, but I'm hoping they'll increase in value later when the market isn't getting completely flooded.

But yeah, there's really no use to them.

Higher Steam level = higher friend limit. I've been hitting the 300 limit all the time and now thanks to the badges to show I'm an active community member, have been able to increase it to 410.

I don't have to cull my friends list anymore!

I'm keeping mine since this is a recent feature. There has been mentions that they're exploring a possibility to have "card games" in which case, game on.

I'm making money off of mine on the market, why the hell would you give yours away for free when people will pay for it?!

Since the summer sale, the base prices deteriorated to very poor levels but it should rise again afterwards.

To actually answer the thread's question which, sadly no one has, there's no way to disable them.

Just sell 'em for like... whatever you want, actually, they're out of your inventory no matter what price you set them at.

Meanwhile, I love the things. They're gonna be making me so much money in a few days.

There's no way to opt out of Steam trading cards at the moment. Right now, I kinda like 'em. I sold over 60 of my cards for more than $10 and scored quite a few games off the summer sale with that money.

Why?

If you don't want them, Just sell them on the Community market. Sure they only go for 20pish each, but that adds up if you have multiple ones. The money goes directly into your steam wallet.

Put them on the market, 20 Trading cards could earn you a cheap game or a piece of DLC.

Really? I didn't know that. Now that I actually use my PC for a bit more gaming, that might be an issue for me. I've had to cull my XBL friends list a few times. Good to know.

I don't believe there is a way to avoid them other than not playing games which have them or playing offline somehow. Since they are public there isn't really an option to opt out either, so you're kind of stuck getting them or avoiding them which will get harder as they become more widespread. They've seriously exploded over the sale to the point they are worth even less on the market than after the beta ended.

You could always try and trade a few and get some extra crap for your profile and some extra friend slots. And if you are giving them away then I'll gladly take a couple, we're best friends remember :p Or maybe consider doing a competition for them?

Yes, a fight to the death does sound like a worthy way to chose who gets the cards. I will meet you and the other unworthy competitors on the arena at dawn.

:p

Well, seeing as you only get half of the cards needed for one level of the badge it's still more "a member who has dumped more money into Steam" than anything else, really (not that level 30ish is that much of money dumped at this point I suppose, but there are a few people who did exactly the "hey look how rich I/my parents am/are" thing...) Seeing as community trading will generally only get you 10% of what you need to max out your badges, the rest being the market.

I'm actually not too happy with Valve in regard to this thing. I also liked the simple and practical look of the old profiles, so meh. But I did manage to get a bit of pocket money with them to afford an extra game on the sale...

Yeap, that's my primary reason for trying to increase my level. I can understand having imposing a limit in the first place, as each friend slot takes up space on the database (as well as traffic from pinging the server to see who's online and what they're doing). So by allowing increases based on community involvement, Valve is rewarding those people.

Sure, but again, before you got no rewards for having a lot of games (aside from a badge for 100, 250, 500 and 1000, etc). Now there are more tangible rewards as it were. Bought a lot of games, there's a way to increase some stats here and there.

While there are some people who dump money into it right away and are up to like Level 115 already, maxing out even the foil badges, I have yet to spend a single dime on any cards, all from trading, selling, and forgoing some badges for others.

Being nosey i was going through peoples freind lists and i found someone exactly as you describe.

They had about 5 foil badges, (Foils are rare and expensive) And 0.0 hours in each game.

Rings of "More money than sense" don't it?
