(Before reading, please note that I AM in favor of gay marriage, in case you're very thick and don't get that right away)

You might hear people go on about how "Gay marriage is wrong", and "How it shoud be illegal" and so on. But I've yet to hear an objective reason for the case. They sometimes try to justify their position with "It would hurt regular marriage", but this is far fetched at best and a flat out lie at worst.

Fortunately these forums tend to be pretty open-minded on the matter, but if you happen to disagree with me, I'd very much like to hear a good, solid, factual reason to support your position.

EDIT: Lol, I finaly caught on to the error in the title X). I originally wanted it to say "would be" instead of "is" but forgot to delete the "be".

I can find no reason why it would hurt me or society in general if we embraced all kinds of love. I have biases but I'm not about to let them blind me.

The "best" I've heard is the "for your own good" sort of argument, but that falls short because it starts from the default assumption homosexuality is bad or wrong and gays just need to be protected.

Very "white man's burden."

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Think a minute: Have you ever heard a genuine counterpoint to the support? Don't you find it the least bit odd that the criticism for gay marriage almost universally comes from someone who is either bigoted against gays, ignorant to what the actual impacts are, or a politician who by unofficial definition will lie?

some people tend to think that if gay marriage is legal then it would set a precedent for other "more weird" types of marriages, like polygamy. but i think that's a little far fetched.

Because their religion says so.

They usually conveniently overlook the fact that I am not of their religion when making these sorts of statements.

Well, you see, if you have people infected with the disease of homosexuality and you let them marry, they might generate homosexual children, who will take over 'Merica and outlaw heterosexuality whilst destroying GOOD OLD-FASHIONED VALUES!

Go for it.

I'm not gay and not a gay woman, so it really doesn't affect me if gay people go off the market and find happiness with someone else, and I have never heard a good counter-argument to the contrary.

Pssst, edit the title.

And the only reason I can think of is people being insecure.

Dude, I'm still trying to wrap my head around why anyone would want to get married in the first place.

Well, beyond the tax benefits anyway.

edit: blanking all of my responses. I said I wanted to provoke discussion, but I guess all I ended up provoking was people flaming me that agreed with me. I know this is "taking my ball and going home" but I can't field 30 pms and more thread replies about a view that I explicitly said that I don't share. Thanks guys.

I disagree with using the term "marriage" because the idea of "marriage" as it is has been the same for thousands of years, and now we have to change it because... why exactly? Because less than 10% of the worlds population demands a change of ideas? What's next? "Marriage" to a goat? "Marriage" to your left hand? Once you break the defined nature of the language, where does it end?

Why not civil union? Why not a whole new word? Why must it be "marriage?"

By the way, that's Elton John's opinion, as well as mine. I'm not against civil unions, but I am against using the term "marriage."

I don't know is there any reason it is be wrong?

Hard to argue rationally when your grammar is atrocious.

OT: People believe what they believe. I'm of the mentality that you shouldn't force your beliefs on other people, but some people really do believe that gay marriage is wrong. They may also believe that allowing it is akin to ruining the world and is a "slippery slope". I don't agree with that, but then again, it's legal here and I've yet to see my corner of the world come to an end.

*points to Religion & Politics forum*

I'm calling it, but this will attract a lot of people arguing over subjects that aren't exactly clear to anyone.

I think it's fine. Doesn't affect my life in any way.

Isn't polygamy already legal in Utah? :). Seriously this is actually part of the problem since seperate states are able to enforce their own laws on this matter. Unfortunately meaning you're not likely to see gay marriage legalised in places like Alabama anytime soon. As for the whole religious thing, Churches don't seem mind housing weddings for Atheists, Agnostics and people of non-christrian religion so why carry on with such a sanctimonious attitude?

Your right and thank you for saying that. People in my church always say its like a disease and that the people should choose to not be gay. I'm like can just you just choose not to feel attracted to beautiful women? Same thing.
