For THAT price, it's not too bad. and ASUS aren't that bad of a brand either. (if it was ACER though I'd recommend you not to go near it)

HEY, I USE AN ACER.

And yes, the quality is nothing to call home about. Remember, the GPU is still the most important factor influencing game performance. Your videocard is listed here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6550M.41143.0.html. Now, your videocard's performance is roughly on par with mine, a 5650 HD at stock settings (with an Acer by the way).

I play with an i5-430m and 4 gigs of DDR3 Ram with Windows 7. I will tell you right now that it's slightly out of date. I was never able to play and DX 11 game with very good settings, nor could I max out any DX 10 game. I cannot comment on your notebook processor, but check notebookcheck.com for it. But if the main performance booster is the GPU, and you're serious about gaming, I'd recommend you go for a more powerful GPU. I can probably play all modern games on medium-high settings, but my notebook is starting to feel its age, and don't expect to play with that those fancy DX 11 graphics and anti-aliasing and soft-shadows. Maybe you can find a nice notebook with a 5850 or 6960/6970.

If he's serious about PC gaming and he wants a bargain, he wouldn't be going for a notebook at all. Yes, laptops are increasingly able to deal with games, but they certainly do not have the best price/performance ratios out there. There's no point throwing good money after bad on an ultra-spec gaming laptop.
I remember I had a desktop in college but was always envious of people with laptops. They could use their laptops in class, in the library, and a laptop is still infinitely more flexible than a desktop. You're definitely right about the downfalls of it though.

That's not entirely true... mostly but not entirely. Couple of blokes I know earn good coin and spend most of the year travelling so it was worth if for them to import a couple of high end Sagers (beams of pure jealousy shot from my eyes when they told me). Still, if you're a dedicated gamers, rarely spend more than a week anywhere and have the money to spend a gaming laptop can be worth it.
