Hello

So my friends, i was replaying witcher 3 again recently and i realize one thing. the combat of this game is so clunky that make assassins creed combat masterpiece. i mean game can be really good that critics claim if combat is much better but sadly its not. i mean take a look at this

thats one of the major reason why i think witcher 3 is incredibly overrated. this game cant done a basic gameplay mechanics good. sure it does have excellent universe and lore but combat is just AWFUL! and story and characters are incredibly boring too.

Do you think witcher 3 combat is worst ever?

Meh.

It was adequate.

Awfully simple though, when you got right down to it. Press dodge whenever an enemy attacks, mash attack at all other times. Pause occasionally to apply the shield spell.

Everything else was unnecessary and often useless.

I wouldn't have minded so much but it really wasn't involved enough to sustain a game that damn long.

Yes. Witchr 3 combat is worst forever because of this one aspect of the the game. Assassin's Creed, the go-to-example for tedious combat, now shines like diamond in sun. Now that I think about it, it is all terrible. All of it. No middle-ground. Just hyperbole.

...

*sigh*

Seriously OP, do you have to resort to all-or-nothing/black & white statements whenever you "discuss" or dismiss a game? It does nothing but diminish the opinion of your statements.

OT: The combat system is serviceable/adequate/fine/it gets the job done.

The combat system is fairly accessible with a few paths of deviation for those that like to experiment with magic, alchemy or a dedication to the differents schools of sword-based combat. It gives you all the right tools and it's up to you to figure out what works for you. -- It's not exactly a style/precision-based hack & slash that requires a varied string of combos/quick reactionary timing. But does the more grounded feel of the combat fit into the established setting? I believe it most certainly does.

Criticizing the story or characters is a highly subjective notion. So what you might find boring, someone else may find intriguing.

Basically, no...it's not the worst combat ever. [sub][small](Ride to Hell: Retribution)[/small][/sub] You would have more of a leg to stand on if you were talking about the first Witcher game. But Witcher 3? Nope.

Well, it depends on the person. Here is a somewhat simplified way to find out answer these:

1. Have you played any games (plural)?
2. Take the answer for the above and invert it.
3. That's now the answer to the original question.

As you see - it would vary wildly between people.

Well if it's anything like combat in Witcher 1, I would rank it pretty low on the list of combat systems I enjoy. Dragon Age Origins still takes the trophy for the system I enjoy the least though.

Probably the worst combat of any game that won many GoTY award. I really don't get how a combat system that belong in a crappy movie tie in video game managed to get such high praise. It's super simple (like the video said, it's all about spam). It never evolve from it's incredibly simplistic early form. There's 3 weapon in the entire game (sword, axe and crossbow, and I'm been generous here since axe are super rare) and they have a very limited moveset, so if dark soul had only 1 weapon it would still have a better combat variety than the entirety of witcher 3. Due to its incredible simplistic nature, every enemy fight more or less the same, so there's 3 type of combat: 1 v 1, 1 v many and 1 v flyer. The talent system is redundant, especially the mutagen stuff, which means there's almost no play style variety, you don't have much of a choice but to primary rely on the incredible simplistic melee system.

It's not the worst in existence, but even 15 year ago it would have been simplistic.

No. Witcher 1 still takes the cake.

As for 3rd one... I just don't understand. 2nd one(director's cut or whatever version with combat improvement mod on it) had slightly better combat... How did it got worse?

Oh, so this is the point it's come to? I know the internet loves to lash out at games that achieve success for themselves, but has it really gone from 'The combat isn't it's strongest suit' to 'Worst gameplay ever'?

No of course it doesn't have the worst gameplay ever. What a stupid comment. Not even remotely close and the only way you could ever even think that might be the case is if you've only ever played less than a dozen games in your entire life. In fact Witcher 3's combat is at worst perfectly serviceable and at best extremely entertaining. Without spoiling anything that early boss fight in Hearts of Stone for example is brilliant. To say that it's the worst ever or even truly bad is just hyperbole.

You might not like it, but that hardly makes it terrible.

Just recently: Walking Dead Season 1? Bioshock: Infinite? Skyrim?

I can think of plenty.

I understand english isn't everyone's first language, but this thread title is rustling my jimmies more than anything else today; you do realise you can edit it, right? I am just gonna try and drink away the memory of reading this thread. The more brain cell deaths, the better.

Edit: I just noticed that brain cell is very similar to B-cell and would like to confirm that i was not implying anything unsavoury towards OP, no matter how disagreeable their opinions may be. No murderous intentions to be found here this time! ;) An unfortunate coincidence, sorry!

I like the combat, i like dodging and picking the right sword strikes for the right situations, though now that i'm level 20 something it is rather easy against ordinary foes, i could up the difficulty but i don't want the game to be hard on top of being long.
I won't defend it against criticism, but i do enjoy it.

It is, in fact, almost nothing like The Witcher except for the fact that you still have two different swords and use mechanics such as alchemy and magical signs to augment your abilities. As someone else said, The Witcher 3 doesn't even have the worst combat in The Witcher franchise.

I never played the first two Witcher games because I heard about how awful their combat was, but the combat in Witcher 3 is one of the many reasons it fast became my favorite game of all time. In Death March difficulty, the amount of quick-thinking involved in staying alive was (in my opinion) on par with Dark Souls. Unfortunately, you become pretty OP about halfway through Witcher 3, but before you reach level ~15, combat was very Souls-esque in both execution and urgency.

No RPGs really have good combat. Even Dank Souls is blatantly inferior to many 90s/early 2000s FPS games, let alone compare it to the Strategy genre elite.

Witcher 3 has good for an ARPG combat. Serviceable, good. It did not stop other parts of the game from being really good.

And no, it is not overrated. Gaming as a medium is (and the Witcher games are inferior to the books) but that is another topic.
I agree that most RPG has terrible gameplay. they are praised because of RPG elements, story, universe but not because of gameplay.
old school FPS games shits all over RPGs when it comes to gameplay.

Yeah, sorry, I don't see it. I enjoyed the combat in that game immensely. I played it on the PC, I ramped up difficulty and chose my play style, which changes significantly between strong and fast. Mashing was out of the question, timing blocks/dodges/rolling and attacks was a game changer. The signs alone change how the game is played quite a bit. I haven't played Creed or the Souls games, but this was the most fun combat I had played in quite a while.

come on my dear friend, it seem like you have not played much games if you think witcher 3 combat is any good. even those who give it GOTY think its combat suck but they love story, presentation stuff.

the controlling is also terrible. It apears that they design with controller in mind. gerald of rivendale can barely navigate a ladder.

"thats one of the major reason why i think witcher 3 is incredibly overrated."

No. The only reason to consider something overrated is to consider wrong that other people like the game too much. It's criticism about the people, not the game itself.
