MUDs arent the only 'career-boosting' game activity.
A couple of years ago I was a member of a large outfit in the MMOFPS Planetside. When the Outfit leaders convinced me to start leading squads I was very skeptical - but after several successful operations I was promoted to 2nd in command.
At that time in RL I was a lowly analyst and had no leadership experience to speak off. As I became more and more confident leading 9 other players I noticed my work leadership also improving - to the point where I was promoted to Team Leader.
So in short any kind of social interaction in an online environment, I believe is a great training ground for work related 'soft' skills - such as leadership.
