Hi all,

I was wondering if you guys and gals have an item or piece clothing which is 'you' but people who don't know you think really strange of or the opposite of what it means for you.

I myself have an old Dutch milatary trenchcoat. I love it because I think it looks nice, has a history and keeps me warm till mid-winter. Sometimes when I hit the street people look at me quite strange and I've heard someone calling me: "Gestapo." once. I don't care, I know I'm not one, but I can understand somewhat that reaction.
My question is: Do you have any items or clothing that people could interpret differently than what it means or is for you?

I guess I got very cross a few years ago when people started to call me 'emo' for wearing a few clothing items I'd been wearing for years- hoody, studded belt, low slung bag etc. Even worse were the new self-styled 'emos' who *congratulated* me on my clothing choices, but suggested, for example, that I wore skinny jeans rather than baggy ones to get the trend better.

I started to miss when all those people just used to shout 'hippy' and spit at me =(

I dressed as the resident evil 4 merchant on Halloween one time for school and everyone who saw me screamed "Columbine!!!!"
I wear a trenchcoat a lot in winter and I'm often mistaken as a drug dealer when I go to the city.

in t-shirt form. I've been asked about seven times by people I don't know 'So.. You like hentai then?'

Also, people find my fedora hat strange for some reason, which I only wear to gigs.
That's actually a pretty cool shirt! I can see it now...

OT: Sweaters. Not the really puffy ones, but a really thin one, that's gray outside, and white inside.
It's summer.
I still wear it.
People always ask me "Why are you wearing a sweater when it's summer?"
I always answer "It's my style". I got used to wearing sweaters. I don't know why, but I just do.
So, does this count then?

I used to wear a baseball cap every day. Sometimes it had a team on it that I don't actually cheer for. People assumed I liked and knew about whatever team was on the cap.

Oh yes, namely my communist shirts (I'm actually a conservative libertarian, but a few years ago I went to China and bought as much communist garb as I possibly could.) Also, I wear cowboy boots all the time, my buddies very rarely see me without them on, they're just so dang comfortable.

Another thing that is 'mine', is I like to wear either a red or turquoise bandanna around my neck during summer time. Protip: If you wet the bandanna and wear it around your neck it will cool the arteries in your neck and help with keeping your entire body cool.

I've been called "emo" a lot too, cause I only wear studded belts (THEY LOOK BETTER! The two of us are SO much more awesome than people without those belts XD) and wear dark clothes mostly. I wear dark colors cause I look better in it. Red, black and purple are "my" colors. They work on me. Sometimes very bright pink in my hair, when I'm feeling crazy =3. I like dying my hair, so thats another "emo" label, cause obviously no one else dyes their hair...

Yes, I have emotions. Everyone does. But I don't whine about every little thing like how my dad "hates" me cause he doesn't let me go on parties when I was 13-14 >>. I really hate those people that say things like that, like they know anything about having a tough life, rich bastards XD.

People comment on how I "should" dress too. Pisses me off. I wear what I want to wear. People always say I look silly in my military boonies (especially the US woodland one with kitty ears on), but I don't care. I love boonies and I couldn't go a day without at least seeing one =3.

I've got a Trilby hat with a reset button on it. It's purely for decorative purposes, yet people can't stop hitting it. Also I've got a pikachu necklace. Luckily I only got laughed at once for that.

I more or less constantly wear this brown t-shirt.
http://www.ahoodie.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/drop_dead_raptors_t-shirt_dinosaur.jpg

It's because it's awesome, but people assume I'm a massive scene kid for it, which grates my nerves, as I'm more of a death/black metal kinda guy, I'm just not built like one.

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot, people almost universally recognise me by my Opeth beanie now, it doesn't come off.

It sure does! Like I said, any item or clothing that makes people go "WTF?!" but you don't care what they think because it is just your style. And indeed, nice shirt. Used to have one of the old ghost in the shell movie. But it's all wrinkled now because of the washing in time :(

I instantly liked you because, although I don't quite understand it, I'm in love with the =3 emote. It's... adorable.

The problem with the emo label was that the status quo for being a little different in my area for my type of people was to wear whatever you wanted- some of us were full on goths, some were a little old-school hippie, some of us were a little punk but mostly we were all bits of that. When emo swept the town, it was a fashion that the fashionable kids started to wear- and us, with our studded belts and mohicans and hoodies and whatnot, were suddenly not different enough, and that was a little sad. I had a sad time when I became around 15, where the people you could talk to weren't the ones in black anymore- the people wearing black were the ones who used to spit at you and call you a dirty hippy.

I wear hiking boots as they're really comfortable, and I have a flat foot (just one) so if I wear the wrong shoes I can get severe foot pain. I hardly ever go hiking though, but I don't mind people getting the impression I'm a rugged outdoorsman.

People also comment on my Rosarius soul armour pendant which is a winged skull set on a giant "I" people assume I'm an emo or some such when it's actually a limited edition Warhammer 40K merchandise. Then again when people ask me what it is I say it's to protect me from Daemons so it's understandable.

My Hammer and Sickle patterned wallet.

"Hey why the Commie wallet? You flaunting your political standing?"

"No, I bought it because it looks nice and I like it. I don't need to flaunt that I'm a communist."

Unlike 70% of boys at my school, my hair barely ever reaches more than three inches long.

So I'm usually mistaken as someone with strict parents. How, I don't know.
