Well, we can't deny that Apple makes great computers. Most will even say they're better than PC (hell, I agree). So I figured that mac users deserved a Mac thread (even PC users should read up on Mac). So here it is the iThread dedicated to Mac chat.

I would also like to invite some pro Mac users to discuss on here and answer questions about Macs.

I would say that 90% of computer users disagree with you.

This isn't a statement, I mean it as an honest question to all Mac users...

Why did you buy a Mac as opposed to a PC?

I second this question, and not as an attack on Macs, but just what attracted you to them.

I think the answer will be either "I needed it for x software that was free" or "because it was cool".

Many reasons :

Performance. Macs are really performant computers and they always have been. Go to Apple.com and look up the Mac Pro, it's insane.

Esthetics. They also do look pretty nice and sleek.

Annoyance. Vista vs. Mac OS X. That's all i got to say.

Service. Apple has a great warranty and they replace almost without question. Not only that, they now will transfer all your files from your PC to a Mac when you make the purchase of one, free of charge.

Marketing. I will admit I'm a slave to marketing, so are alot of people. And Apple knows how to present their stuff.

Nimbus, 90% of computer owners don't care what they get, they just want something cheap, that browses the web and is able to use a word processing document. That's hardly the crowd to ask if a Mac is a good machine.

My former boss was/is a Mac hardcore fan/ fanboy. I honestly don't know why. Anything that has an Apple logo is automatically better. Dell monitor? Peh! This monitor is made by Apple, THUS better!

He can't stand Windows, even though there's nothing wrong with it if you do the things he does on his Mac. I guess Mac users are the emos/goths of the digital society. They just want to be different.

Yes we can, quite easily.
Then do it. don't say you can.
Ok then I will.

I deny that Apple makes great computers.
Well that was even easier than I thought it would be.
Did i mention that most people who deny that Apple makes great computers are either ignorant, stupid or both? I think we have a good example of one of those people now. Thanks TheGhostOfSin.

Get some information, and make a counter-argument that makes sense. This thread was made for just that Discussion on Macs. You can defend them or say that they suck. but we want reasons.

Performance: So is any good PC. Seriously, my PC could whoop most macs any day of the week. (At the things I use it for. Games, things that use less than 8 Cores; Everything)

Esthetics: I disagree. I want something that looks like a god-damned monolith, not a... a... I don't even know how to describve how ugly macs look to me.

Annoyance: The only OS I have used that I thought was worse to use than OSX was Ubuntu. And that was probably because I didn't give Ubuntu a proper try.

Service: Depends on where you buy. Most PC outles/PC parts outlets have outstanding service. Also, what's the point of having all my files transfered when iTunes can't play them (Except for like, 3 file types) or there is no MS Word.

Marketing: Youtube search "I'm a PC". Some of that shit is hilarious.

They have less programs. That is the prime argument, I think.

Honestly, I may be in the 1% here, but I've never had any problems with vista. Maybe a small bug here or there, but much better than XP or any other main-stream OS.

I'll admit it, I much prefer windows to mac. I can't fully explain why but the strangest reason is the smear campaign that mac launched. I always saw mac as more of an underdog, the guys who beat the the ***holes on the evil team at the end of the movie in a thrilling upset. The smear campaign they've been using against windows the whole time really ruins that image for me and watching windows take the high road (at least so far) and avoid mac-bashing speaks volumes to me. That is my opinion and I'm actually very interested in learning more what makes macs so awesome (I mean that honestly, I don't know a huge amount about them). I also have the similar question, Why a mac? Why not a PC?

I suppose I should also point out that I much prefer a PC that is capable of being changed to personal preference. I love being able to modify my machine to make it stronger for gaming, movie making, movie watching, or anything else I feel like. As far as I know, (and I would like to point out my knowledge of macs is limited at best) the mac is not as compatible with new hardware or software.

I should also point out that I love gaming and powerful gaming computers. To my knowledge,(which once again, is fairly limited) macs are not nearly as powerful and comparing the mac-pro to my own machine, my machine is several times more powerful.

I have one other question if nobody minds, are makes capable of gaming? And if so, at what level?

Some people are a slave to marketing, as I've said. And Apple knows how to Market their product. We have a bunch of Mac Pros where I work (its a newspaper) and personally i prefer the interface and etc. of the Mac, it also runs the Adobe programs (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) alot better in my opinion. But if you look at the setup, you'll notice that we have the Mac towers with some plain PC monitors. Mac monitors are nice, BUT, they're pricey and not really essential when you can get one for a quarter of the price from Dell.

Too bloody true you are slave to marketing.

You can't say better performance because you can build the same spec PC as the Mac Pro and for cheaper.

You also can't just say Vista vs OSX because the majority don't use vista they use XP and even then a lot of people use linux. So you have to compare OSX with all the other OS on the market.

Service also depends hugely on who you bought your PC from or if you built it yourself.

I'll give you looks but they aren't my taste, even then there is a myriad of case designs for PCs.

This is why I think these debates are stupid. Only thing to you can discuss is the merits of the OS but thats subjective because people want different things out of there OS.

Some want gaming (windows), others want to be able to have full control over there OS and PC (Linux) some want something thats easy and simple or how apple put it "just works"(OSX).

They don't have less programs, they just have less of the common PC programs, and alot less games (unfortunately. The Mac has some of the Basic PC programs like Word, Power Point Excel, etc. It also has all of the Adobe programs (InDesign, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Audition, etc.) But for all the PC programs it lacks it makes up for with a different (and often cooler or better) Mac program (Garage Band, Final Cut, Aperture, Logic Express, iMovie, etc.) Getting a Mac takes getting used to because of this, but many of the people that have done it, have been alot happier with the new programs.

And which of those come pre-installed on every mac for free? (Serious question)
