I just took my last final exam of my undergrad and have thus, ended my career as a student. Its a weird and scary feeling.

Oh yeah, and now I am officially unemployed! AWESOME! >.>

Anyway, for the sake of discussion value riddle me this: how did you handle the end of your education (be that high school, undergraduate degree, masters, etc.)? How soon did you find a job?

After High School, I moved into my Dad's house and had a job by October (roughly 3 months of gaming and conventions) That was back in 2006 though. Dad and I moved from the house to a condo (close enough for me to keep that same job). I went to a community college for half a semester then quit, breaking up with my girlfriend in the process. early 2009 I moved out of Dad's and back into Mom's, getting a new job at Blockbuster in August (spending roughly 4 months unemployed) My store closed the following July (damn near had one year under my belt) and I tried a big box job which utterly failed after about a month. September I found a haunted trail that pays it's actors which got me money that October (2010). November until this past May I worked at Gamestop (didn't like). Moved again, this time several states south and am currently working at Target, having been there for a full month.

I graduated 5 years ago this past June and it really doesn't feel like it...It seems really weird to thing about it, ya know? 5 years after high school and I still don't really have a life-life. Like...no career or a house of my own. It's freaking weird. I still feel like a teenager or a kid most of the time.

I envy people who have a plan. I have way too many friends who already have jobs lined-up despite the economic downturn. Kind of hurts my moral a bit :p

Congratulations!

I had my graduation ceremony Wed 20th, was very exciting. Am now also in the 'unemployed' section of the country. Not so exciting.

I think I handled it pretty well. I didn't really ever feel a connection to my university as such, so leaving it wasn't very hard. The hard part was the night before, when I went to my last open mic night at my favourite pub. They put on a goodbye bash and everything, was very emotional.

Yeah, it wasn't very difficult for me to leave my school behind either. Most of my friends didn't need summer classes to finish their degrees anyway, so I have been sticking it out here with the people who will never leave. (I have a friend coming back for his second masters, /facepalm).

At the end of Secondary school, I was like "All right, official NEET now!" and then "now to wait for 2 months while the universe decides whether I go to an awesome uni 30 minutes away in London, or a not-quite-as-awesome uni in Aberystwyth". No feelings towards my old school or anything, I don't really roll with IRL meetings so I don't lose anything from not seeing people any more.

I handled it the same way I handle anything: I think about it, go home and then sleep.

I went straight into a PhD program afterwards. I still haven't had a job - but what is important is the experience that I am accumulating and the connections that I make during the every day course of labwork. Even if it pays nothing (at least without some scholarship), PhD research is essentially a scientist's first job - it has the hours of a job, the workload of a job, the responsibilities of a job and the stress of 2 jobs combined.

After my masters it took me a couple of months to find a job. It was mostly because the companies I applied for a job with were slow to respond, and I had to go over there a couple of times before I finally got real offers. I'd say it was pretty much okay, as I never really had a lot of stress about finding a job, but I could have probably sped up the process if I had applied while I was still writing my thesis.

Just graduated high school. Everyone was crying around me and all I could think about was "I can't wait to get outta here". I remember the experience fondly though...

worked 6 months with two jobs (and went to europe for a quick trip) then moved cities to pursue my dream of working in film and that's where I am right now...

It's been only a year since I graduated and pretty much everything has changed for me. girlfriend and i broke up (long distance sucks), new friends, new city, new school...yeah haha

Can't wait till I can get out there and work though!! just a year and a half left :)!

After I completed my associate's, I simply continued working my part-time job as a full-time and I am currently waiting for my next employer to call me up and send me for training in Oklahoma. (For Air Traffic Control)

Don't take that as a bad sign; that means there ARE jobs available.
It's better than the alternative where there still aren't any open positions after being in college for years.

I got my Associates, started the hunt and the week before I was to go in for an interview for a real job (career stuff; not just internships or wage-fodder) the company's contract with their employer ended and they had to terminate both the position I was being interviewed for, and about 15 other jobs.

It was data processing at an aeronautics R&D firm...so close.
In hindsight, my life would probably be just as stressful as it is now if everything hadn't gone to shit, but at least I would have been making real progress for my future.

Congratulations! What did you major in? I still have one more year for my bachelor's which is crazy to think about. I currently have an internship at a place I would like to work at, but you need at least a masters to work there. I might work there part time as I pursue my masters at Ga Tech.
