Whenever I have an argument with anyone, such as lack of dedicated servers on Modern Warfare 2 (Save it for another thread), it seems like people always say "It's just a game", possibly to replace the fact that they either don't want to continue talking about it or they just lack any other arguments to support their side. Now, maybe I am overreacting and maybe I shouldn't care so much about it, but is it so bad to care about the quality/balance of a game? What are your thoughts on this?

"It's just a game" loses it's merit if a person spends a good chunk of their daily time on it.
EDIT: I'd elaborate more, but I lost my train of thought.

That's what I just usually say, if I can't convince them to shut up.

I mean, it's not that big of a deal. Sure, it might be a hobby, a major one, but you've got others to play.

God I love this avatar. Happy birthday dududuf!

"It's just a game" is not a valid argument, it's a dismissive statement. Ending with it essentially says "I'm not arguing anymore." Weither it was an important argument or not is another matter, but it's not really valid to just dismiss the whole thing. I would say that about 99% of the time though video game arguments are about stupid stuff anyways.

Well, the whole thing is kind of pointless due to one simple fact: We shouldn't be arguing about the quality of any particular game, anyways. If you don't like it, don't play it. Don't waste your time trying to convince other people that it sucks, just don't play it.

It is just a game. You have every right to get pissed on one but I honestly don't want to have a brain aneurysm because I'm arguing with someone over it. My point, when you start being a dick to your team because you lost. It's just a game. You died with that weapon and want it back. It's just a game. Life's too short to take a game so seriously.

Well it depends on the argument. I know to that dedicated servers argument I would say its just a game. I have played it for hours and hours and really do not miss them. Basically all "Its just a game" says is that you gotta chill, Its not that important to the other person and they dont want to debate you on it.

I think the idea is "if you have a problem with the game, don't buy it." That's what "it's just a game" means to me. Yes, there can be problems, but who cares if the good outweighs the bad? And if the bad outweighs the good, then don't play the game. I do think all games should try to be great, but just because they aren't really that important if they're not.

I hate it as well.

"Its just a game."

Yeah, a game I spent $60 damn dollars on. I'll complain if I don't like something if I freaking pay for it dammit!

Just because you buy something doesn't mean you have to like everything about it.

Debate the game all you want. It's your right.

Now, when you're my roommate, and spend countless hours playing Metal Gear Online, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Demon's Souls, and any other online multiplayer, and whenever you don't do something right you shout at the top of your lungs: "AAAH! WHAT THE FUCK!!! YOU FUCKING *****! FUCKING FAGGOTS! YOU FUCKER! FUCK THIS GAME" I officially have the right to beat you over the head with a shovel, and then say "It's just a game."

Of course, you'll be in the hospital at that point, but that will more than make up for the last 2 years of listening to your shit.

Sorry, I went off on a rant there... Debate the game all you want. It's your right.

Just a game is an argument people use when they are dumb and don't understand the complexity of Video Games. That or they are just assholes.

You probably shouldn't care so much about it. It is just a game after all, a momentary diversion on the road to the Grave.

I think I just quoted Cornelius there... *checks* Yes, yes I did quote Cornelius Bear, so be it.

If the person using that excuse plays a lot of games themselves, or has continued the argument for a long time, then that's a bullshit argument. If you walk up to your friend and start bitching about your video game, and they use it to get you off their back right away, then they are justified.

AAAAAAND beat down.

I heard Lost: The Show confused the crap outta EVERYBODY.

OT: imo, people just don't want to argue about it. They don't want to discuss it and to them, at that moment, it's just a game.

Or, they don't get your dedication. Yeah.

I say it to myself. I have some obsessive tendencies and when I can't honestly say I am deriving fun from a game anymore I say it's just a game and ditch it.
