...When this is something that's naturally going to happen in a culture where everyone likes music that is extremely melodically, harmonically, and rhythmically constrained. It doesn't matter if you listen to really angry thrash metal, really wanky progressive rock, or really "indie" rock music.

It's just the nature of the beast. And it's not just limited to music in the West either. You'll find this just about everywhere in the world. How else do you think music is capable of being consumed? It builds upon already agreed upon theoretical tenets and standards.

If we all really like a relatively limited set of chords and chord progressions, what else could happen?

Hell, outside of some noise and classical music, I guarantee you any decent DJ can mix just about any song together with another.
